The seat mounting structure may include an inflation module, a linkage system, a sensor system, and a side airbag. The linkage system attaches the seat mounting structure to a seat and may help guide the movement of the seat. The sensor system may include a radar sensor and an optical sensor to help the sensor system anticipate an impending side impact. The seat mounting structure mitigates injury to the occupant by moving the occupant vertically up and laterally toward a centerline of the vehicle, thus increasing the space between the sidewall of the vehicle and the occupant. Additionally, the inflation module may comprise an inflatable structure that stiffens a floor structure of the vehicle upon inflation.

A modular fire detection and extinguishing system is disclosed that is inexpensive, compact, and modular to allow easy aftermarket installation in a variety of vehicles. The system may include a detector, a trigger coupled to the detector and a gas generant fire extinguisher, a modular distribution line in fluid communication with the extinguisher and a nozzle. The system allows exhaust gas from the gas generant fire extinguisher to carry dry powdered fire suppressant from the fire extinguisher and through the nozzle to disperse the fire suppressant substantially uniformly throughout a fire hazard zone. The extinguisher is installed such that exhaust gas must aerate substantially all the fire suppressant before exiting the extinguisher.

A toroidal-shaped adaptive output inflator is provided wherein the inflator includes an outer housing and an inner housing together defining an outer chamber and an inner chamber. A supply of gas-generating pyrotechnic material having a burn rate that is pressure dependent is contained within the outer chamber and at least a portion of the supply of gas-generating pyrotechnic material is reactable to generate a product gas. The inflator also includes a first plurality of apertures and a second plurality of apertures each formed in the inner housing, and each providing independent fluidic communication between the outer chamber and the inner chamber wherethrough at least a portion of the product gas can exit the outer chamber into the inner chamber. An output control device positioned within the inner chamber is movable or rotatable between a first or open position allowing fluidic communication between the outer chamber and the inner chamber through the first plurality of apertures and the second plurality of apertures, and a second or closed position at least partially obstructing fluidic communication between the outer chamber and the inner chamber through at least one of the first plurality of apertures. Also provided is a control assembly in operational control communication with the inflator and associated or related methods for adjusting inflation gas output from the inflator.

An airbag inflator system and method of manufacture is disclosed which may be stored in a small area, is simple to fabricate, directs exhaust gas from a standardized inflator, sufficiently cools and diffuses the exhaust gas, and catches hot gas generant residue. The system includes an airbag inflator within a sleeve. Solid sections of the sleeve circumscribe the inflator and are positioned to divert exhaust gas leaving an exit port of the inflator. The configuration of the solid sections provides that the inflator need not be rotated during assembly to position exit ports below solid sections. The diverted exhaust gas unrolls the sleeve to form an exhaust passage. The gas passes through the exhaust passage and is dispersed by the permeable section before entering the textile airbag. In this way, a simple, effective diffusion system for curtain airbag inflators is provided.

An airbag inflator diffusion system is disclosed which is simple to fabricate, directs exhaust gas from a standardized inflator, sufficiently cools the exhaust gas, catches hot gas generant residue pieces, and sufficiently diffuses the exhaust gas. The system includes an airbag inflator, and a sleeve. The inflator has simple exit ports which are positioned along the length of the inflator. The sleeve is sized to receive the inflator. The sleeve includes lobes which project from its length. The lobes are positioned such that exhaust gas leaving an exit port is diverted by the lobe in at least two directions. The diverted exhaust gas is thereby cooled and allowed to disperse within the textile airbag. The system also includes a catch which may be a wire mesh. The catch further cools and causes the exhaust gas to disperse. In this way, a simple, effective diffuser for a curtain airbag inflator is provided.

A device for discharging a fire retardant material comprising a housing capable of storing a fire retardant material. The housing has an initiator attached to a first end, while a discharging port is attached at a second end. Additionally, sealed within the housing is a driver which forces the fire retardant material towards the discharging port. The driver follows a path defined by a bypass tube located centrally within the housing. The driver is forced along the path by exit gases created by the initiator attached at the first end. The housing also has a choke assembly located near the second end thereof. The choke assembly selectively controls the rate at which the fire retardant material and the pressurized gases exit through the discharging port. The choke assembly has a choke body with a first and second cavity. Furthermore, choke body has passageways and apertures for directing the flow of both the fire retardant material and the pressurized gases. The choke assembly creates a pressure differential between the first end and the second end of the housing such that the first end is at a higher pressure than the second end. Therefore, the pressure differential aids in the discharging of the fire retardant material.

A driver side inflator base for a vehicle safety system which is stamped from a thin sheet of aluminum. The base includes a central axis, a plurality of stamped concentric rings extending upwardly from a bottom of the base and spaced from the central axis. An interface attachment flange is provided for mounting the inflator, and a squib pocket extending about the central axis of the base is capable of holding a squib of the gas inflator. The concentric rings, attachment flange and squib pocket are all formed during the stamping of the base; thus, excessive machining is not required. Only minor machining is necessary to complete the base. The base of the present invention is designed to reduce the overall inflator cost, while maintaining the processing capability and quality of current bases.

The system is operated by causing an opening in the first chamber, creating a pressure differential between the two chambers which causes the piston to move and fluid to flow between the two chambers. Movement of the piston may or may not expose flow orifices between the two chambers. Pyrotechnic material is enclosed within the piston to generate combustion products for augmenting performance. An inflator for a safety restraint system includes a gas storage vessel having a mouth, and a diffuser extending outwardly from the mouth and defining gas outlet ports. A combustion chamber having a flared open end is secured to the gas storage vessel peripherally adjacent the mouth and defines throttle orifices for releasing inflation gas from the gas storage vessel. A breakaway closure member is secured across the mouth of the gas storage vessel and the open end of the combustion chamber housing, the breakaway closure member including a periphery ring, a translating boss having an initiator mounted therethrough and a skirt slidingly received in the open end of the combustion chamber housing, and a frangible web connecting the boss to the periphery ring. The combustion chamber housing further defines exhaust ports opening to the gas storage vessel, and contains combustible material, which may be pyrotechnic gas generator or fluid fuel. The initiator ignites the combustible material and the resultant increased pressure in the combustion chamber housing fractures the frangible web and drives the translating boss into the diffuser to release gas from the gas storage vessel through the throttle orifices and diffuser. Hot products of combustion are delivered through the combustion chamber exhaust ports to heat and augment the pressure of the gas.
