Abstract:
A configurable multimode despreader for spread spectrum applications is disclosed herein. The despreader includes a plurality of data lines, at least one selective coupler coupled to the plurality of data lines, at least one multiplier coupled to the selective coupler, and a code input line coupled to the multiplier. The selective coupler selectively couples one of the plurality of data lines with the multiplier per any one of a plurality of despreading protocols. The multiplier then multiplies a desired input data type received from the selective coupler with a despreading code chip received from the code input line to produce an observation. The programmable multimode despreader supports variable code and data modulation schemes and variable spreading factors.
Abstract:
A configurable all-digital coherent demodulator system for spread spectrum digital communications is disclosed herein. The demodulator system includes an extended and long code demodulator (ELCD) coupled to a traffic channel demodulator (TCD) and a parameter estimator (PE). The demodulator also includes a pilot assisted correction device (PACD) that is coupled to the PE and the TCD. The ELCD provides a code-demodulated signal to the TCD and the PE. In turn, the TCD provides a demodulated output data signal to the PE. The PACD corrects the phase error of the demodulated output data based on an error estimate that is fed forward from the PE. Accumulation operations in the ELCD, TCD, and PE are all programmable. Similarly, a phase delay in the PACD is also programmable to provide synchronization with the error estimate from the PE.

The module and method also includes computational units configurable to correlate each received signal sample of a plurality of received signal samples with a corresponding PN sequence of the plurality of PN sequences, and further configurable to provide other hardware resources. A number of computational units from the plurality of computational units are selectively configured to correlate the received signal samples with the PN sequences—the number depending upon availability of the plurality of computational units from providing the other hardware resources. In another embodiment, a communication device having a system acquisition function is provided which includes the system acquisition module and a receiver configured to receive signals, where a plurality of configurable computational units are selectively configurable to implement the PN sequence generator.
Abstract:
An apparatus for performing a multipath search including a plurality of time-multiplexed chip correlators, wherein each of the plurality of time-multiplexed chip correlators has a pipeline, and further wherein each of the plurality of time-multiplexed chip correlators has a accumulation time is described. A method is described for performing a multipath search including performing multipath search slot processing, determining if a current multipath searching slot is a last multipath searching slot, if the current multipath searching slot is not the last multipath searching slot, then repeating the performing step, if the current multipath searching slot is the last multipath searching slot, then initializing a multipath searching slot index, determining if an non-coherent accumulation has been completed if the accumulation has not been completed then repeating all steps and if the accumulation has been completed, then search results are sorted to locate energy peaks corresponding to multipath locations.
Abstract:
In a wireless communication system, a portable device and an in-vehicle device wirelessly communicate with each other by a spread spectrum method. The in-vehicle device transmits a synchronization signal indicative of a reference period to the portable device. The in-vehicle device performs code acquisition for only a portion of a spread wireless signal received from the portable device. The portion has a starting point in a search period from a search start point to a search end point. The search start point is identified based on the reference period and a predetermined first correction time. The search end point is identified based on the reference period and a predetermined second correction time.
Abstract:
A receiver for a multi-mode wireless device is provided. The receiver has multiple analog RF front end modules, with each module supporting a different mode of operation. The receiver has a single digital backend module for generating a digital baseband signal. A controller selects one of the available RF modules to use, and the selected RF module provides an analog communication signal to the digital backend. Each available mode has an associated set of factors. When a particular mode is selected, the set of factors associated with the selected mode is provided to the digital backend. The digital backend uses these factors to adjust the processing characteristics of its components, such as its analog to digital converter, filters, and gain controller. In this way, the single digital backend is adaptable to the requirements of each of the available radio modes.

Abstract:
The invention provides methods and apparatus for multiple user detection (MUD) processing that have application, for example, in improving the capacity CDMA and other wireless base stations. One aspect of the invention provides a multiprocessor, multiuser detection system for detecting user transmitted symbols in CDMA short-code spectrum waveforms. A first processing element generates a matrix (hereinafter, “gamma matrix”) that represents a correlation between a short-code associated with one user and those associated with one or more other users. A set of second processing elements generates, e.g., from the gamma matrix, a matrix (hereinafter, “R-matrix”) that represents cross-correlations among user waveforms based on their amplitudes and time lags. A third procesing element produces estimates of the user transmitted symbols as a function of the R-matrix.
