A method of developing electrostatic images in which a liquid developer is maintained in quiescent condition in contact with the base material carrying the electrostatic image and wherein the developer contains in separate coexistence within an insulating carrier liquid toner particles of relatively low dielectric constant and movement-inducing particles having a high dielectric constant. The presence of both sets of particles results in agitation in the liquid due to particle movement in a field by charge exchange between the high dielectric particles and the other particles to produce random agitation of the particles in the liquid and thereby high mobility of the toner particles during developing.

Disclosed herein are novel liquid toner compositions that are suitable for developing electrostatic images. The toner compositions of the present invention comprise pigment, dye, and a polymer, the combination being suspended in an aliphatic saturated hydrocarbon. The improvement in the performance of these toners is due to the presence of small, but significant amounts of dyes which are capable of modifying the surface characteristics of the toner pigment particles.

A hybrid liquid toner composed of a mixture of two different types of liquid toner. One type is a liquid toner that includes a complex amphipathic molecule of which at least a fixer and a dispersant are polymeric moieties and which additionally includes a charge director and optionally includes a color agent, all of these being carried by a volatile organic solvent of high electrical resistivity. The other type of liquid toner is one that includes a fixer and a dispersant as separate chemical entities and further includes a charge director, a pigment type color agent and a carrier solvent such as mentioned above. The two toners can be mixed in a very wide range of proportions and when so mixed have several advantages which makes the hybrid toner particularly useful in connection with preparation of lithographic masters and microfiche reproductions by electrostatography as well as useful as an all purpose liquid toner.

A method and ink composition for development of an electrostatic latent image with liquid developer is disclosed. The liquid developer has a viscosity suitable for convenient application to an imaged surface in the development of latent electrostatic images and has improved conductivity resulting from incorporating conductivity control agents in the form of quaternary ammonium compounds which are soluble in the carrier of the ink composition. The conductive ink composition comprises a coloring agent, optionally a binder and a dispersing agent, a carrier and a quaternary ammonium compound soluble in the liquid carrier.
