Abstract:
A method for providing performance tracking, operator guidance, and feedback by monitoring operator interactions with a vehicle service system. The operator's interactions with the service equipment during a vehicle service procedure which produce detectable effects are monitored. If an operator completes a vehicle service procedure correctly, a visual or audible announcement is provided, and an entry recorded in a system log. If an operator mistake is detected during the vehicle service procedure, a different visual or audible announcement is provided, and a suitable entry recorded in the system log. The system log is subsequently utilized to generate a performance score, either based on overall system usage, or upon the usage by a specific operator if operator-identifying information is available during each service procedure.
Abstract:
A calibration fixture for use during a calibration procedure of a machine vision vehicle wheel alignment system. The calibration fixture consists of a pair of support legs, and a rotating transverse bar supported within an outer support tube secured between the support legs. The rotating transverse bar is supported within the outer support tube by a pair of annular bearings adjacent each end of the outer support tube, and is isolated from external influences which may result in deflection or distortion. A hub for receiving a sensor or optical target is secured to each end of the rotating transverse bar, such that optical targets mounted to each hub are maintained in axial alignment at opposite ends of the rotating transverse bar.
Abstract:
A method by which a vehicle wheel service system, having at least one load roller for applying a generally radial load to a wheel assembly mounted on a driven spindle shaft during rotation thereof, provides a measurement which is representative of the loaded rolling resistance of the wheel assembly undergoing testing. In order to rotationally drive the spindle shaft with the vehicle wheel assembly mounted there on, energy is supplied to a drive motor operatively coupled to rotationally drive the spindle shaft. By monitoring the amount of energy or drive torque required to rotationally drive the spindle shaft and achieve and maintain a desired rotational speed for the wheel assembly when engaged with the load roller, a measurement which is related to the loaded rolling resistance of the wheel assembly is obtained by the vehicle wheel balancing system.
Abstract:
A vehicle service system wherein a computer is configured for active wireless communication over a wireless micro-network with any of a variety of similarly configured external components and devices brought into proximity with the computer, including, but not limited to, sensors, input and output devices, mobile computers, onboard vehicle computers, and other vehicle service equipment.
Abstract:
A vehicle alignment sensor system includes a first sensor assembly for measuring at least a first angle with respect to a fixed reference, that angle being related in a predetermined manner to an alignment angle of a vehicle whose alignment is to be measured, and a second sensor assembly for mounting in a known geometrical relationship to a wheel of a vehicle whose alignment is to be measured. The first sensor assembly has at least one detector, and the second sensor assembly has at least a pair of emitters in fixed geometrical relationship with respect to each other. The detector is capable of measuring the apparent geometrical relationship of the pair of emitters to determine a relative alignment angle of the vehicle, so that a true alignment angle of the vehicle is determinable from the first angle and the relative alignment angle. A calibration method using the present invention is also disclosed.
Abstract:
A system and method for utilizing identification data from RFID tags, engraved QR codes, or embossed serial numbers associated with individual tires or vehicles to monitor or track the physical location and/or condition of individual tires and/or a vehicle across multiple pieces of automotive service equipment within the service shop environment. Tire and/or vehicle identification data is communicated from automotive service equipment to a cloud-based data processing application to generate or supplement an accessible record or log of data associated with one or more pieces of automotive service equipment, a vehicle service shop, an individual tire, a vehicle, or a customer.
Abstract:
A vehicle measurement and ADAS inspection and/or calibration system incorporating dual support columns arranged in a front-to-back configuration on a rolling base to achieve a low center of gravity. A vertically adjustable instrumentation and target support lateral crossbeam is mounted to a front column and is linked to a counterweight supported on a rear column by a driven cable and pulley assembly. A storage cabinet is additionally located on the wheeled base, partially enclosing a lower portion of the rear column, and extending forward towards the front column. Brake releases are operatively coupled to associated friction brake pads located below the base. The friction brake pads are biased into engagement with a supporting floor surface to prevent unintended movement of the base, and temporarily disengaged by operation of the associated brake releases.
Abstract:
A system and method for guiding placement of a vehicle service external fixture relative to a vehicle undergoing service or inspection. A vehicle service system support structure having at least one camera module is positioned at an initial location within a vehicle service area, and a location of the initial location within a vehicle reference frame is established from images of optical targets secured to the vehicle. The vehicle service system support structure is subsequently repositioned relative to the vehicle to a new position located outside of an external fixture placement region, while maintaining at least one of the observed optical targets within a field of view of the camera module. The new position of the vehicle service system support structure within said vehicle reference frame is determined from target images, and a placement location within the placement region for the external fixture is identified relative to the vehicle.
Abstract:
A machine-vision vehicle service system, and methods of operation, incorporating at least one gimbaled sensor module configured with at least one of a camera, an optical projector, or a range finder to acquire or convey data associated with surfaces in proximity to the vehicle service system for guiding placement of vehicle service components relative to a vehicle undergoing service. The gimbaled sensor module is operatively coupled to a processing system configured with software instructions to selectively control an orientation of the gimbaled guidance system about one or more axis of rotation, enabling observation, projection of visible indicia, or displacement measurement along an associated sensor axis parallel with one of the axis of rotation during vehicle service procedures.
