A method is described for communicating the scene orientation of an exposed strip of left or right hand load photographic film to photo finishing equipment to enable imaging parameters to be set automatically which includes the steps of splicing a first exposed strip of film to a second exposed strip of film with a film-splicing label, encoding the label for left or right hand load of the second film with low resolution indicia, and feeding the spliced first and second films to a film-splicing label reader for reading the code and automatically setting the parameters for normal or inverted scene orientation. A film-splicing label encoded with indicia for identifying the scene orientation and a method for splicing strips of film with the label are also provided.

The channel is formed by a repeating combination of modular squeegee pinch rollers and modular impingement slot nozzles. Photographic processing solution is introduced through the impingement slot nozzles and the squeegee pinch rollers are used to remove the processing solution from the photosensitive material and provide transport of the photosensitive material. Solution level control is achieved by drains positioned below the tops of the upturned sections.

An apparatus that produces digitally generated index prints and normal optical prints as part of the normal printing operation, without requiring the negatives to be cut and handled separately. The foregoing is accomplished by using the exposure determination and subject classification data generated for the normal optical printing operation to rapidly provide the low resolution digital data for creating the individual index print images, during the normal optical printing operation. While the digital images are being created, each digital image is being simultaneously corrected for its own exposure requirement.

A photographic printing apparatus for processing both full frame and panoramic prints from a roll of film containing negatives which have been selectively exposed in either full frame format or panoramic format is disclosed herein, along with its method of operation. The apparatus includes a printing station for receiving successively exposed negatives from the roll of film and an arrangement for electro-optically determining the density of each negative within the printing station at a number of sensing points on the negative. A format status determining arrangement, preferably one which is computerized, responds to the density of the given negative at the various sensing points for determining if the negative contains a full frame image or a panoramic image, or is blank or entirely fogged. If the particular negative at the printing station is determined to contain a full frame image, the printing apparatus makes a print from the negative in the full frame format and if it is determined that the negative contains a panoramic image, the print in made in the panoramic format. On the other hand, if the negative is determined to be a blank or entirely fogged, the apparatus moves that negative out of the print station without making a print.

A hybrid multiple color print reproduction scheme for a digital color image photo-finishing system employing a digitally driven high spatial resolution color printer converts a stored digital positive (e.g. RGB-representative) color image into a second digital color (e.g. CYM-representative) image. This second digital image effectively corresponds to a mirror-reversed complement of the positive color image and is digitally adjusted such that its tone and color characteristics optimize reproduction of the positive image via a conventional chemical development process. The complement color image is output to a digital printer which prints an `internegative` image onto a transparency medium, rather than the customary print paper. This digitally produced `internegative` is used to replicate multiple copies of the original image using a conventional analog electro-optic system and an associated chemical-based print developing unit, thereby providing a substantial savings in reproduction time and costs.

A photographic printer is provided for producing customized photographic prints including a customer-supplied image and an operator-selected artwork. The printer includes a new and improved film gate for supporting at least one printable artwork substantially coplanar with and adjacent to the customer-supplied artwork. The film gate further includes means for supporting a neutral density filter in registry with the artwork. In operation, the printer lamphouse and printing lens are used to print the artwork, during the same exposure as the negative, in a selected position relative to the negative. The printer can be used, for example, to produce customized greeting cards including a customer-supplied image and a holiday greeting.
