Abstract: A mechanism that automatically attaches teat cups to a cow's teats including four telescopically extensible members which each carry a teat cup via a teat cup support which resiliently supports its corresponding teat cup in an upright position. Each extensible member has its own stepper motor to raise and lower the corresponding teat cup and a further stepper motor to move the extensible member horizontally within limits. An ultra-sonic radiation member is carried on a platform between the teat cups as seen in plan which emits a horizontal ultra-sonic beam that is reflected and focused upwardly and caused by movement of the reflector systematically to scan the cow's udder and to locate the teats by their comparatively shorter distances from the reflector. The disposition of the teats is thus sensed by a sensor unit which controls a stepper motors and causes the extensible members independently to raise the teat cups to be received by and attached to corresponding teats for the milking operation.

Abstract: A rinser has a partial-vacuum chamber that constantly communicates with a partial-vacuum line during the rinsing process. The partial-vacuum chamber is separated from the operating space by a diaphragm with an aperture. A spring forces the diaphragm into a position in which is closes off an air inlet into the operating space. Inside the operating space is a float with a shift rod that has a seal at the top that closes off the aperture in the diaphragm as the float rises, interrupting the communication between the operating space and the partial-vacuum line. The breakdown of partial vacuum in the operating space produces a differential pressure on diaphragm, which lifts and releases the air inlet. The seal does not release from the diaphragm until it is forced against a thrust pin loaded by another diaphragm that communicates with the partial-vacuum chamber through one aperture and with the atmosphere through another aperture. The forces exerted on the first diaphragm allow large cross-sections to the atmosphere and to the partial-vacuum line opened and closed, even with a float that, because it carries out only a control function, can be very small.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are described for detecting mastitis in milk animals. Milk from different teats of the animal is passed through conductivity cells and if the conductance of the milk from one teat is different from that of milk from other teats a mastitis infection is likely. A convenient method of comparing conductances using an electrical bridge is described, as is a suitable conductivity cell.
