Abstract: The present invention provides methods for diagnosing a patient with emphysema, COPD of lung injury caused by tobacco use by detecting the levels of EMAP II in a sample. Disclosed herein are the hypervariable regions for a rat monoclonal antibody that binds to a form of EMAP II. This disclosure also includes a polypeptide sequence included in EMAP II that is the target for the binding of the antibody to its target protein. This epitope serves as the basis for a humanized antibody that can be used to treat patients that suffer from pathologies that exhibit elevated levels of EMAP II expression.

Abstract: A method for computing patient-specific hemodynamics. The method includes receiving three dimensional imaging data of a patent, extracting anatomical data from the three dimensional imaging data, calculating velocity and pressure fields corresponding to the extracted anatomical data, and calculating displacement and velocity of extracted solid particles corresponding to the anatomical data. The anatomical data comprises an anatomical boundary.

Abstract: The present invention involves a system and method of providing decision support for assisting medical treatment decision-making. A patient agent software module processes information about a particular patient. A doctor agent software module processes information about a health status of a particular patient, beliefs relating to patient treatments, and the actual effects of treatment decisions. By filtering information over time from the patient agent into the doctor agent, a plurality of decision-outcome nodes are created and formed into a patient-specific outcome tree with the plurality of decision-outcome nodes. An optimal treatment is determined by evaluating the plurality of decision-outcome nodes with a cost per unit change function to output the optimal treatment. When additional information is available from at least one of the patient agent and the doctor agent, the filtering, creating, and determining steps are repeated thus allowing for the system to “reason over time”, continuously updating and learning as new information is received.

Abstract: Systems comprising a processor in electrical communication with a tangible, non-transitory memory that, in response to an execution by the processor, cause the processor to measure a relative biological effectiveness of a beam on a region of a human body, and a beam applicator in electrical communication with the processor, wherein a characteristic of the beam can be adjusted based on the measured relative biological effectiveness are disclosed. Methods of treatment comprising measuring, by a processor capable of detecting potential biological hot spots, a relative biological effectiveness of a beam on a region of a human body, designing a beam therapy treatment plan based on the measured relative biological effectiveness, and applying a beam to a patient with a region in need of beam therapy with a beam applicator in electrical communication with the processor capable of detecting potential biological hot spots are also disclosed.

Abstract: Methods for imaging a substrate include: inducing an electrospray from a nanopipette probe; varying a distance between the nanopipette probe and a surface of the substrate until a predefined electrospray current and/or a predefined distance threshold is reached; and determining a topography of the surface of the substrate based on feedback derived from distance dependency of the electrospray current. Apparatuses for performing scanning electrospray microscopy and methods for spatially controlled deposition of material on surfaces of substrates are described.

Abstract: Compositions, systems and methods are provided for conferring disease resistance to plant pathogens that use proteases to target plant substrate proteins inside plant cells. Briefly, the compositions, systems and methods are based upon plant substrate proteins that are targeted by pathogen-specific proteases and that activate nucleotide binding site-leucine rich repeat (NB-LRR) disease resistance proteins when cleaved by the protease. These substrate proteins are modified such that the endogenous protease recognition sequence is replaced by a protease recognition sequence specific to a different pathogen protease (i.e., a heterologous protease recognition sequence). The modified plant substrate protein therefore can be used in connection with its corresponding NB-LRR protein to activate resistance in response to cleavage by the heterologous pathogen-specific protease. When activated by the plant pathogen-specific protease, the pair initiates host defense responses thereto, including programmed cell death.
