Abstract: A vehicle, radar system and method of determining an angle of arrival of an object is disclosed. A radar array generates a linear frequency modulated source signal and includes a first channel and a second channel for receiving a reflection of the source signal from the object. A processor obtains a channel response for the first radar channel and for the second radar channel over a bandwidth of the source signal, partitions the frequency band into a plurality of frequency sub-bands, determines a variation between the first and second channel responses for a selected frequency sub-band, receives a reflection of the source signal at the first channel and at the second channel, corrects at least the second channel within the frequency sub-band using the determined variation, and determines an angle of arrival for the object based on the correction within the frequency sub-band.

The transmitter is configured to generate elliptically-polarized signals having a transmission polarization sense. The receiver configured to be receptive to signals having a reception polarization sense opposite the transmission polarization sense, thereby filtering multiply-reflected signals. The processor operates the transmitter to generate a source signal and operates the receiver to receive a reflection of the source signal from the object. The processor detects the object from the received reflection.

Abstract: A method and apparatus that compensate radar channel length variation are provided. The method includes transmitting a signal from the transmitter, determining a response of each of the receivers to the transmitted signal, and storing the determined responses; for each stored response of the stored responses, calculating a path length of the transmitted signal; for each of the transmitters, determining and storing a median receive path difference in the path length between a transmitter and each receiver; for each receiver of the receivers, determining and storing a median receive path difference in the path length between a receiver and each transmitter; and compensating for the median receive path difference and the median transmit path difference by performing a frequency shift on or time delaying a signal to be transmitted by a transmitter or received by a receiver.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining a frequency of an echo signal obtained by a radar system is disclosed. The echo signal in response to a source signal of the radar system is received at a receiver. A harmonic oscillator generates a harmonic component signal, and a multiplier multiplies the echo signal with the harmonic component signal to obtain a combined signal. A Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is performed on the combined signal to obtain a peak in a frequency space, wherein a central frequency of a frequency bin in the frequency space is shifted with respect to the frequency of the echo signal by the harmonic component signal. The frequency of the echo signal is determined from the shifted central frequency.

Abstract: A vehicle, system and method of driving the vehicle. A radar system obtains a measured location of an object in an environment of the vehicle. A processor predicts a location of the object, determines a distance between the predicted location of the object and the measured location of the object, determines a confidence level for the predicted location the object based on the determined distance, selects a tracking state for the object based on the confidence level, and drives the vehicle to avoid the object according to the tracking state of the object. The processor and radar system may be onboard the vehicle.

Abstract: A vehicle radar system, such as a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) radar system, for estimating a Doppler frequency shift and a method of using the same. In one example, a modulated signal is mixed with an orthogonal code sequence and is transmitted by a transmit antenna array with a plurality of transmitting antennas. The signals reflect off of a target object and are received by a receive antenna array with a plurality of receiving antennas. Each of the received signals, which likely includes a Doppler frequency shift, is processed and mixed with a number of frequency shift hypotheses that are intended to offset the Doppler frequency shift and result in a series of correlation values. The frequency shift hypothesis with the highest correlation value is selected and used to correct for the Doppler frequency shift so that more accurate target object parameters, such as velocity, can be obtained.

Abstract: A radar system mounted on a platform includes a transmitter turned off during a silent interval, and a receiver to receive one or more signals resulting from transmission by one or more other radars that transmit linear frequency modulated signals during the silent interval. A processor estimates parameters of the one or more other radars. The parameters include bandwidth and slope of the respective linear frequency modulated signal and the parameters are used to modify a transmitted signal or the processing by the radar system.
