The invention relates to a process for the production of dinitrotoluene by the two-stage nitration of toluene. In the first stage of this process, toluene was reacted adiabatically with nitrating acid so that at least 90% of the toluene was reacted off and no more than 70% of the toluene formed dinitrotoluene. The resulting organic phase containing mononitrotoluene and the aqueous acid phase containing sulfuric acid were separated, and the aqueous acid phase containing sulfuric acid was concentrated by flash evaporation. The resulting concentrated sulfuric acid was recycled into the reaction in the first stage, and/or into the reaction in the second stage, and/or into the concentration in the second stage.In the second stage, the organic phase containing mononitrotoluene from the first stage was completely reacted isothermally with nitrating acid. The organic phase and the aqueous acid phase containing sulfuric acid were then separated, and the aqueous acid phase containing sulfuric acid was concentrated by vacuum evaporation. The resulting concentrated sulfuric acid was recycled into the reaction in the first stage and/or the second stage.

The present invention is directed to a process for the production of polyamines of the diphenylmethane series having a high diamine content and a low 2,2'-diamino-diphenylmethane content by condensing aniline with formaldehyde in the presence of hydrochloric acid as catalyst, neutralizing the acid catalyst at the end of the condensation reaction and working up the polyamine mixture thus obtained by distillation, characterized in that(a) in a first reaction stage, from 2.0 to 3.5 moles of aniline are reacted with 1 mole of formaldehyde in the presence of hydrochloric acid or a condensation product produced from 2.0 to 3.5 moles of aniline and 1 mole of formaldehyde in the absence of acid catalyst is reacted in the presence of hydrochloric acid at a degree of protonation maintained at 40 to 60% at temperatures below 50.degree. C.,(b) more aniline is then added to the reaction mixture so that the molar ratio of amine nitrogen atoms in the form of free aniline and the reaction products formed in accordance with (a) to formaldehyde chemically bound in the form of methylene bridges in those reaction products rises to more than 10:1 and up to 20:1 with the degree of protonation decreasing correspondingly,(c) the reaction mixture obtained in accordance with (b) is heated to allow the N-substituted intermediate products present to be completely rearranged into polyamines containing unsubstituted primary amino groups, and(d) the reaction mixture obtained in accordance with (c) is worked up by distillation after neutralization of the acid.The invention is also directed to the use of the polyamines so produced in the manufacture of polyisocyanates.

Isocyanates, preferably diisocyanates and polyisocyanates of the diphenylmethane series (MDI), are produced by reaction of amines dissolved in a solvent with phosgene in the same solvent to form the corresponding isocyanates. Hydrogen chloride and excess phosgene are subsequently removed from the reaction mixture to obtain a crude isocyanate-containing solution. Subsequently, the crude isocyanate-containing solution is separated by distillation into isocyanates and solvent. The solvent is recycled and used for the production of solutions of the amines and of phosgene. The solvent being recycled is treated to reduce the phosgene and diisocyanate contents before being used for the production of the solution of the amine.

P1 is a vapor phase low-boiler and solvent-enriched gas stream, P2 is a low-boiler and solvent-enriched product, P3 is a high boiler-enriched bottoms product containing toluene diisocyanate and P4 is a toluene diisocyanate product stream lean in low-boilers, high-boilers and reaction residues.
