Abstract:
Apparatus for steering a drill bit at the end of a drill string within the borehole to selectively effect drilling along either a curved path or a substantially straight path comprises a first downhole motor assembly coupled to the drill bit and operable to rotate the drill bit to effect drilling, the assembly being arranged to angularly tilt the rotational axis of the drill bit relative to the axis of the section of the borehole being drilled, and a second downhole motor coupled to the first motor assembly to the drill string and operable to rotate the first motor assembly. In addition the apparatus includes a lock sub which is selectively actuable to (i) effect rotation of the drill bit by the first motor assembly while the first motor assembly is maintained at a defined axial orientation so as to cause drilling of the borehole along a curved path in the direction of tilt of the drill bit, or (ii) effect rotation of the drill bit by the first motor assembly while the first motor assembly is rotated by the second motor assembly so as to cause drilling of the borehole along a substantially straight path. Rotation of the drill string as a whole is not required to effect drilling in either mode.
Abstract:
A bent motor housing has a top end by which it is connected to the end of a drill string within a borehole and a bottom end on which a drill bit is mounted for drilling the borehole. A bend is provided intermediate the top and bottom ends for angularly offsetting the rotational axis of the drill bit relative to the longitudinal axis of the drill string to cause the drill bit to engage the wall of the borehole on one side. Furthermore a longitudinal bore provided for passage of a motor shaft extends from the top end to the bottom end of the housing and is concentrically disposed with respect to the top end and the bottom end but eccentrically disposed with respect to intermediate housing sections so as to form a stand-off portion in the vicinity of the bend for bearing against the wall of the borehole on the opposite side to that engaged by the drill bit so as to cause the angle of tilt .THETA. of the rotational axis of the drill bit relative to the axis of the borehole to exceed the angle of the bend in the housing.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a steering component, to a steering assembly, and to a method of steering a drill bit in a borehole. The steering component is adapted for connection to a drill string, the drill string carrying a drill bit and a motor for rotating the drill bit. The steering component comprises: a rotatable driveshaft adapted for connection between the drill bit and the motor; a drive mechanism; and an offsetting component; the drive mechanism providing a rotatable connection between the drill string and the offsetting component whereby the drill string can rotate relative to the offsetting component. The drive mechanism is adapted to drive the offsetting component to rotate in an opposed direction to the driveshaft, so as to counter the rotation of the offsetting component which is induced by friction within the componentry as the driveshaft rotates. The steering component and method are likely to have their greatest utility in steering a drill bit during drilling for oil and gas.
Abstract:
An intervertebral joint prosthesis having a ball component (22) for engagement with a first vertebra (26) and a trough component (24) for engagement with a second vertebra (27) adjacent to the first vertebra is disclosed. The trough component (24) includes a generally concave surface (50) having a substantially flat portion (52). When the ball component (22) and the trough component (24) are engaged to their respective vertebrae, the ball component (72) and the trough component (24) engage each other, permitting rotation and translation of the vertebrae with respect to each other. Both components include a flange (34, 56) for engaging a vertebra. The invention also contemplates a method for and a tool for use in implanting a two-piece intervertebral joint prosthesis.

According to the invention there is provided a steerable drill bit arrangement comprising a drill bit, a steering component and a stabilizer, the steering component being adapted to provide a steering force which in use can drive the drill bit along a non-linear path, the stabilizer being located between the drill bit and the steering component and in use providing a fulcrum for the steering force provided by the steering component, the position of the fulcrum provided by the stabilizer being adjustable relative to the drill bit and the steering component. In use, the position of the fulcrum can be adjusted to vary the maximum curvature of the borehole and to suit the rock type(s) being drilled.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a steering assembly and to a steering component, suitable for use in drilling operations for oil and gas. The steering assembly comprises a downhole motor which can rotate the drill bit, and a steering component. The steering component has a shaft and a set of elements for engaging the borehole in use. The shaft has a longitudinal axis. The set of elements has a centerline and is movable relative to the shaft between a first position in which the centerline is offset from the longitudinal axis of the shaft by a first distance, and a second position in which the centerline is offset from the longitudinal axis of the shaft by a second distance. In use in drilling operations, movement of the set of elements from the first position to the second position alters the degree of curvature of the drilled hole.
