    Abstract: This invention provides methods of treatment using retro-inverso peptides derived from interleukin-6 (IL-6) having between 15 and about 40 amino acids, and including the sequence that is retro-inverso with respect to SEQ ID NO: 1, i.e. wherein said peptide comprises the sequence D-Glu-D-Ala-D-Met-D-Lys-D-Pro-D-Leu-D-Asn-D-Leu-D-Asn-D-Asn-D-Glu-D-Ala-D-Leu-D-Ala-D-Glu. The peptides of the invention have the same activity as native IL-6 and also have neurotrophic activity. The peptides of the invention are also less susceptible to proteolytic degradation in vivo because of their D-amino acid linkage.

    Abstract: A method for synchronizing a master clock to a slave clock located in master and slave devices communicating with one another via a laser signal beam and a communications channel, each of the devices including a homodyne detector for determining a respective correlation pattern with respect to a phase tuned local oscillator includes steps for recording master and slave correlation patterns while the signal beam cycles between first and second operating modes, transmitting the master correlation pattern and associated first and second times at which the signal beam shifted between the first and second operating modes and between the second and first operating modes over the communications channel, comparing a portion of the master correlation pattern between the first and second times to the slave correlation pattern to thereby determine the time offset between the master and slave correlation patterns, and applying the time offset to the slave clock. A corresponding clock synchronization system is also described.

    Abstract: Disclosed are compositions comprising viral vectors derived from the paramyxovirus, simian virus 5 (SV5). The SV5 vectors of the present invention are designed so that the HN protein that binds to sialic acid is not expressed, and in certain embodiments a foreign membrane bound protein is expressed on the viral surface that targets the virus to particular cells or tissues. The vector then is able to deliver a toxin or cytotoxic agent to the target cell. Also disclosed are nucleic acid segments useful as viral genomes and methods of producing viral vectors.

    Abstract: A valve mounting device holds a valve in a fixed position and prevents rotation of the valve during operation of the valve handle. The device includes a tubular sleeve dimensioned to receive a valve body and in one embodiment has a notch for receiving a valve supply tube exit typical in angle stop valves. The sleeve is affixed to a guide tube which bends the flexible pipe through a predetermined arc for engaging the valve and holding the sleeve end valve in position. The guide tube is affixed to a rigid structure such as a wall or partition member thereby holding the valve and pipe in a rigid position. Escutcheon plates are adapted to provide support to the guide tube and sleeve.

    Abstract: A sports training target useful in developing accuracy and technique in delivering a projectile such as a baseball or hockey puck is provided. A series of nested and adjustable shutters are formed about a frame so as to protect the frame and absorb the energy of the projectile and eliminate concern from the player of being hit by a rebounded projectile thus allowing the player to concentrate on the training objectives. A target opening includes elements to establish a target for a particular drill. By way of example, the elements can be arranged for pitching to the target at shortened distances compared to the standard mound to plate distance. The target elements are then arranged to compensate for a side arm or other styled pitcher. With the combination of element placement within the target opening and the energy absorbent characteristics of the target, training takes place in confined areas without concern for the safety of the pitcher because of rebounded balls. Batting drills close to the target are also safely made using the shutters as targets because of the high absorption characteristics of the shutter material and target construction.

    Abstract: An air return system for a rotatable rack baking oven having a heat source and a blower associated therewith for providing a flow of heated air across a baking chamber of the oven. The outlet end of the blower is connected via ductwork to an air outlet vent which introduces the heated air into the baking chamber. The air outlet vent includes a lattice of fixed vanes which are elongated in the direction of intended air flow. This arrangement channels the heated air to exit normal to the outlet vent to maintain a well defined column of air with less turbulence. An air return vent is located opposite the air inlet vent and is operatively associated with the heating means and the inlet side of the blower. The air return vent includes a panel having a plurality of holes through which the air may be drawn. A number of return holes in the return vent are blocked such that their numbers vary in inverse proportion to the drawing force produced by the inlet of the blower. This produces a uniform draw of air from the baking chamber, aiding in the uniform flow across the chamber.
