Abstract:
Methods of joining pipe section and joined pipe assemblies are described. The pipe sections, e.g., pipes and couplers, are joined by a mechanical interference bond formed using a shape memory polymer key. The key can be inserted into a first keyway of one pipe section, the pipes fitted to align first keyway with a second keyway of the second pipe section, and the shape memory polymer activated to at least partially fill both keyways.
Abstract:
A plurality of particles comprising a crosslinked aromatic epoxy vinyl ester polymer, wherein a particle from the plurality of proppant particles swells not more than 20 percent by volume when submerged in toluene for 24 hours at 70° C. is disclosed. A plurality of particles comprising a crosslinked aromatic epoxy vinyl ester polymer, wherein a particle from the plurality of particles maintains at least 75 percent of its height under a pressure of 1.7×107 Pascals up to at least 135° C. is also disclosed. Mixtures of the plurality of particles and other particles, fluids containing the plurality of particles, methods of making the plurality of particles, and methods of fracturing a subterranean geological formation are also disclosed.
Abstract:
Disclosed herein are polymeric molds that can be used to make molded articles. The polymeric molds are made from cyclic olefin polymers that may be formed by ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of a polycyclic monomer having two or more reactive double bonds and a cyclic monomer comprising one reactive double bond. Fluorinated monomers may be used. The polymeric molds may be structured molds in that they have at least one microstructured feature having a dimension of less than about 2 mm, or less than about 500 um. The polymeric molds may also have a plurality of such microstructured features. Also disclosed herein are methods of making the polymeric molds, methods of making molded articles therefrom, and the molded articles.
Abstract:
A shape memory polymer composition is described comprising greater that 90 wt. % cyclooctene, less than 10 wt. % of a multicyclic diene, comprising at least two cyclo olefinic rings with at least two reactive double bonds, and less than 2 wt. % of a metathesis catalyst.

Abstract:
A curable composition is provided comprising an oligomer having a plurality of pendent and/or terminal ethylenically unsaturated, free-radically polymerizable functional groups, a free-radically polymerizable crosslinking agent, and/or a diluent monomer, and a photoinitiator. The composition, when cured, is non-yellowing, exhibits low shrinkage and low birefringence making it suitable for many optical applications such as optical lenses, optical fibers, prisms, light guides, optical adhesives, and optical films.
Abstract:
Fasteners for producing double blind joints where the fastener is not visible or accessible are provided. The fasteners comprise a shape memory polymer that may be used to fasten workpieces by heating the fasteners, inducing recovery of the original, permanent shape of the fasteners.
Abstract:
Articles comprise: a nonwoven fiber web and one or more strips bonded to the nonwoven fiber web. The strips comprise a shape-memory polymer that has a strained temporary shape and an intrinsic shape. If heated at or above a transition temperature, the strip at least partially converts from the strained temporary shape to the intrinsic shape, thereby causing at least one of folding, cupping, or puckering of the non-woven fiber web. Methods of heating the articles to provide folded, cupped, and/or puckered articles are also disclosed.
Abstract:
A composite material comprises (i) a polymer, (ii) a polymerizer, (iii) a protected corresponding activator for the polymerizer, and (iv) a plurality of capsules. The polymerizer is in the capsules, and the corresponding activator is protected with a corresponding encapsulant for the polymer and the polymerizer.
