Abstract:
A method and computer program are provided for handing off a mobile device in communication with a first wireless system having a first network address to one or more other wireless systems within communication range of the mobile device. The method and computer program include periodically monitoring by the mobile device of communications from the first wireless system and the other wireless systems, calculating a signal strength associated with each of the monitored communications, selecting one of the other wireless systems, and transferring communication to the selected wireless system upon detection of a predetermined threshold of the signal strength associated with the first wireless system.
Abstract:
A wireless quality of service (QoS) agent for an all-Internet Protocol (IP) network. The QoS agent couples to an all-IP network. The coupling means includes communication means for transfer of information between the agent and a QoS manager of the all-IP network. The agent is also able to seamlessly extend QoS support for multimedia applications from wireline to wireless and control QoS of the multimedia applications sent over wireless connections on the all-IP network.
Abstract:
A mobile communications system having a multi-level distributed frame selection and power control architecture includes a plurality of base station transceiver subsystems (BTSs) arranged in cells. Each base station transceiver subsystem (BTS) includes a capability for establishing a radio frequency interface with a subscriber unit in conjunction with a telephone call. A PSEL provides for implementing a power control and frame selection of compressed packet data in conjunction with the telephone call, the PSEL coupled to and being positioned proximate the plurality of base station transceiver subsystems. A router is coupled to the PSEL for routing compressed packet data to and from the PSEL. Lastly, a CSEL provides for implementing call processing and call management in conjunction with the telephone call, the CSEL coupled between the router and a prescribed mobile switching center (MSC) and further being positioned proximate the MSC, wherein the router is further for routing compressed packet data to and from the CSEL.

An integrated MSC/HLR switch accommodates overloads by throttling peripherals during MSC overload conditions, and halting TCAP messages and throttling peripherals during HLR overload conditions.
Abstract:
A self engineering system includes a data acquisition module, a self engineering engine, and a control module. The data acquisition module couples to the communication system and receives current operating data of the communication system. The self engineering engine receives the current operating data and determines new operating parameters of the communication system based upon the current operating data and current operating parameters. The control module implements the new operating parameters within the communication system. The self engineering system may include an expert system that receives the current operating data and, based upon the current operating data and the current operating parameters of the communication system, produces the new operating parameters. The expert system includes a fact library, a knowledge base and an inference engine. The fact library includes configuration data, historical operating data, the current operating parameters and proposed operating parameters. The knowledge base consists of rules intended to alter the fact library based upon contents of the fact library and the current operating data. Finally, the inference engine executes the rules and alters the fact library. The knowledge base and the inference engine then work together to produce the new operating parameters based upon contents of the fact library. The expert system may also include a system simulator that simulates operation of the communication system to verify proposed operating parameters prior to their implementation. The self engineering system also determines configuration errors, possible hardware faults and even improper hardware installation of the communication system. Thus, the self engineering system is useful in cross-checking installation as well as the functionality of the communication system as installed.
Abstract:
The method and apparatus of the architecture of the present invention is accomplished in an embodiment of the present invention by establishing a high speed network interconnection layer between the base station and the mobile switching office. This high speed interconnected network may be an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switch. This architecture allows for a dynamic virtual cell area to be configured around a mobile subscriber as a mobile subscriber moves within the network. As a subscriber leaves a previously defined virtual cell area into a new virtual cell area, the high speed switching network sets up a new virtual cell area around the mobile subscriber in his new area. The network is designed to anticipate a user's mobility pattern and to set up the new virtual cell area in advance of the mobile subscriber moving into the that new area. The network is able to predict the mobile subscriber's future location ahead of time, thus enabling the network to accomplish much of the overhead processing and setup used to accommodate the mobile subscriber before arrival in the new area, thus ensuring a smooth handoff and transition period during a call.
Abstract:
In a cellular mobile access communications system each mobile terminal registers its location at intervals. From the registration history of each mobile, a probable group of cells within which a mobile terminal may be located is predicted. When a mobile is to be paged, the paging message is transmitted to the predicted cell group. If no response is received from the terminal, the page message is then broadcast to further system cells. This reduces the overall paging load on the system.
Abstract:
A wireless network, having a plurality of mobile units operating in a cell of the wireless network, isolates a faulty mobile unit that jams the control channel thereby preventing communication by the other mobile units in the cell. A system and method for isolating the faulty mobile unit monitors the cell traffic pattern among the mobile units in the cell to detect an abnormality, determines whether the abnormality is due to the faulty mobile unit or a problem with the wireless network, and if the abnormality is due to the faulty mobile unit, communicates with the mobile units operating within the cell to isolate the faulty mobile unit.
