A communication device which includes a hardware trie search facility. At least part of a memory is divided into memory blocks, each of said blocks consisting of a multiplicity of locations, at least some of said locations each providing when accessed a pointer to another block and an indication of the size of the block. A shift register holds an address key, and a trie block is accessed using an address composed of a number of bits related to said indication of the size of the block. The key is shifted by said number of bits prior to a subsequent stage of the search. Part of the memory comprises an associated data table which includes entries of data enabling a packet to be forwarded and at least some locations in said blocks provide when accessed a pointer to an entry in the associated data table.

A forwarding database in a network switch is established and maintained by performing a look-up for a source address read from an incoming frame to find a match between the source address in the frame and the source address in an entry which includes that source address, a port number and an age field. New entries are made if matches are not found, so that the forwarding database facilitates the dispatch of frames to destination addresses corresponding to source addresses in the table. The switch maintains a system age, such as a two-bit field, which is changed from time to time and the current system age is entered in the table as the age field when a source address entry is made. When said source address is found by a look-up process, it is updated with the current system age only if the age field of the entry and the current system age do not correspond. There is a saving of bandwidth arising from the avoidance of write cycles when an age field of an entry corresponds to the current system age.

The customer account and the customer-independent transaction data are matched together, authorizing the retail transaction. When multiple retail transactions occur within a short time, a matching technique scores matches between multiple retail transactions and multiple customer-initiated wireless communications.

A network switch which allows a network processor to process resultant data from a look-up engine while the look-up engine proceeds to deal with a subsequent packet. The look-up engine stores the resultant data in registers from which the resultant data is written back for the packet if the processor does not intervene. If the processor intervenes it acts on the resultant data, which is written back for the packet only after the processor has finished. A system of pointers and busy bits ensures that the packet is not forwarded until the look-up engine and (if required) the network processor have completed their operations in relation to the packet.
