摘要: An inductive transducer system for use in high accuracy applications such as linear or rotary encoders, employs two members movable relative to each other. A first, active member induces eddy currents in a second, passive member that lacks a power source or electrical wires connected thereto. The first, active member contains both a transmitter for generating a magnetic field and a receiver for receiving the field. The receiver has a plurality of symmetric loops. Electronic circuitry coupled to the receiver evaluates the relative position between the two members as the passive member disrupts the magnetic field received by the receiver. The inductive transducer can be readily manufactured using known printed circuit board technology, and is substantially immune to contamination by particles, including ferromagnetic particles, oil, water and other fluids. A pulse-driven drive circuit allows the inductive transducer to consume little power, and thus allows the transducer to be readily incorporated into hand-held, battery-powered measurement tools.

摘要: An electronic hand tool type caliper includes a scale track located along a scale member reference edge that forms a sliding bearing with a mating surface of the caliper slide, thereby maintaining proper alignment of the slide jaw. Placing the scale track along the reference edge is advantageous in that the reference edge surface is inherently precisely machined and particles are excluded by the inherently close fit and the wiping action of the sliding bearing. A readhead sensor is mounted within the slide surface that mates to the reference edge to provide the sliding bearing. Thus, a very small readhead sensor may be reliably positioned at an extremely small gap relative to the scale in a protected operating environment, without detrimentally affecting cost, slider friction, or signal strength. High resolution digital signals may be provided.

摘要: Auto focus systems and methods for a machine vision metrology and inspection system provide high speed and high precision auto focusing, while using relatively low-cost and flexible hardware. One aspect of various embodiments of the invention is that the portion of an image frame that is output by a camera is minimized for auto focus images, based on a reduced readout pixel set determined in conjunction with a desired region of interest. The reduced readout pixel set allows a maximized image acquisition rate, which in turn allows faster motion between auto focus image acquisition positions to achieve a desired auto focus precision at a corresponding auto focus execution speed that is approximately optimized in relation to a particular region of interest. In various embodiments, strobe illumination is used to further improve auto focus speed and accuracy. A method is provided for adapting and programming the various associated auto focus control parameters.

摘要: A fiber optic readhead arrangement for imaging a scale onto a set of optical fiber receiver channels is disclosed. The readhead arrangement includes an imaging lens and may include an aperture positioned at a focal point of the imaging lens in a telecentric arrangement. An axicon lens may be utilized to direct source light away from the imaging lens and into a ring-shaped annular source lens which surrounds the imaging lens. A source lens may concentrate source light on the scale in an area where it will be imaged back through the imaging lens to the readhead. In one embodiment, multiple source fibers may be provided around the perimeter of the fiber optic readhead arrangement. In another embodiment, the receiver fibers may also function as source fibers. In various exemplary embodiments, high levels of displacement signal interpolation may be achieved to provide high resolution measurement.

摘要: An electronic caliper using a low power induced current position transducer includes a slider assembly mounted on an elongated beam with first and second measuring jaws projecting from the main beam and slider assembly. The position of the slider assembly on the beam is indicative of the distance between the first and second jaws. A depth bar is also attached to, and projects from, the slider assembly. Relative movement between the measuring jaws is determined by an inductive read head mounted on the slider assembly that couples to flux modulators on the beam. The read head includes a transmitter winding and a pair of receiver windings carried by a common printed circuit board. The flux modulators, which can include both flux disrupters and flux enhancers, are carried by the beam and modulate the magnetic fields produced by the transmitter. Thus, the receiver windings produce output voltages corresponding to the overlap between the modulators and the receiver windings. Signal processing electronics are connected to the read head and determine the relative positions of the jaws by monitoring the output of the receiver windings. A digital display displays the determined position. In one embodiment, either flux enhancers or flux disrupters are used. In another embodiment, both flux disrupters and flux enhancers are used. The relatively insensitive nature of the low power induced current position transducer to industrial contaminants allows the caliper to function with improved reliability when operating in traditional shop environments.

摘要: An electronic linear tape measure using a low power induced current position transducer. The tape measure includes an enclosure case with a lateral slot through which the tape blade can be pulled. The tape blade is wound inside the enclosure case on a tape reel which is mounted on an axis support that has a spring loaded rewind mechanism. Also included are a tape lock, a keypad for various functions, and a conventional LCD display for displaying measured lengths. The signal processing and display electronics of the electronic tape measure are connected to the active portion of the transducer. The display provides an indication of the relative position between the elements of the transducer that coincides with the length of tape that has been pulled from the enclosure case. The relatively insensitive nature of the low power induced current position transducer to contaminants, tape damage and mechanical shock allows construction of an electronic tape measure with the preferred, historically proven, form that functions with greatly improved reliability when operating in a traditional environment. Additionally, the low power consumption of the induced current position transducer significantly increases the practicality of an electronic tape measure.

摘要: A high-accuracy inductive absolute position transducer system has two members movable relative to each other and includes a code track transducer and may include a fine track transducer. The code track transducer includes a code track transmitter winding and at least one set of code track receiver windings. Each set of code track receiver windings includes n balanced pairs. Each balanced pair extends along the measuring axis and includes a positive polarity winding and a negative polarity winding. A code track has a plurality of flux modulator zones distributed along the measuring axis. Flux modulators are formed in at least some of the flux modulator zones. A signal generating and processing circuit is connected to the transmitter winding and each balanced pair. The code track transmitter winding and each balanced pair form an inductive coupling. The flux modulators modulate the inductive coupling between each balanced pair and the code track transmitter winding based on the relative position between the read head member and the scale member. The flux modulators are distributed along the measuring axis such that each pair of adjacent flux modulator zones forms one of a set of output states in an overlying balanced pair. The pairs of adjacent flux modulator zones form a series of code elements extending along the measuring axis such that each set of m adjacent code elements forms a unique codeword. Each unique codeword defines an absolute position of the read head member relative to the scale member to a first resolution.

摘要: A chromatic point sensor (CPS) calibration object and characterizing data are provided. The calibration object comprises a flat base plane with steps extending from it. Step measurement points provided by the steps and base plane measurement points provided by portions of the base plane are intermingled along a measurement track. The characterizing data characterizes known heights of the measurement points. A calibration method acquires measurement data such that some base plane measurement points should be at nearly the same measurement distance and therefore have the same common mode errors relative to known base plane measurement point heights. If such base plane measurement points exhibit minimal error variations, then measurements for those and proximate measurement points may provide reliable calibration data. In contrast, error variations outside an expected range indicate unreliable measurements that should be screened or replaced by new calibration measurements.

摘要: An absolute position-sensing device is usable to measure the relative position of two elements. An absolute scale includes an integrated track extending along a measuring axis of the scale. The integrated track includes a plurality of code portions interleaved with, or embedded in, a plurality of periodic portions. Each periodic portion includes a plurality of periodically-placed incremental scale elements. Each code portion includes a plurality of code elements indicative of an absolute measurement value. The code elements are arranged in code element zones along the direction perpendicular to the motion axis, and are detectable by associated variations along the direction perpendicular to the motion axis. The offset of the periodically placed elements relative to a readhead of the device is combined with the absolute measurement value to determine an absolute position.
