Abstract:
A fluid level and condition detector system including a multimode optical waveguide for insertion into a medium including at least a first fluid whose level is to be monitored, a source of radiation for introducing into one end of the waveguide radiation in a plurality of modes, and means for detecting the difference in radiation flux transmitted by the waveguide with the waveguide covered by the first fluid over its equilibration length, with the waveguide covered by a second fluid of lower index of refraction over its equilibration length, and with the waveguide covered partially by each fluid over its equilibration length and for detecting the difference in radiation flux transmitted by the waveguide due to the combined effects of the change in index of refraction and change in optical absorption coefficient of the first fluid covering at least a portion of the waveguide.
Abstract:
A system is provided for indicating excessive wear of brake linings. The system is usable on vehicles such as automobiles, cars, trucks and busses as well as aircraft or other applications where it is desirable to detect excessive wear of brake linings during operation thereof. The system includes an acoustical signal generating device having an air inlet normally closed by the brake lining. When the lining wears away to a minimum safe thickness, the inlet is opened and ambient air flows into the generator to produce an acoustical signal. An acoustical receiver is positioned in spaced operative relation to the brake system and responds to the acoustical signal to provide a warning indication on the dashboard, for example, of the vehicle so that the operator of the vehicle will be alerted to the worn brake condition.
Abstract:
A disposable infant's diaper includes a wrapper comprising a unitary sheet having a base panel affixed to the diaper back section to form a pocket within which the balance of the wrapper sheet is contained. When the diaper is soiled and the user wishes to dispose of it, pulling an end panel of the sheet from the pocket unfolds the sheet to present lateral flaps bounding a center panel, while the sheet remains affixed to the diaper. The diaper is over-folded onto the sheet center panel, after which the lateral flaps are sequentially over-folded atop the diaper and respectively sealingly attached in place. The complete encapsulation of the diaper is achieved following the over-folding of the sheet end panel atop the previously manipulated lateral flaps. Alternative folded configurations of the wrapper sheet are contemplated.
Abstract:
A composition for effectively treating dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis and scalp psoriasis comprising a combination of essential ingredients consisting of microfine particles of a clay mineral containing adsorbed magnesium, water, ethanol, sodium chloride and, optionally, minor amounts of glycerin and precipitated sulfur. The effectiveness of the method in treating such scalp diseases by topical application to the scalp epidermis is predicated on the capacity of the composition to release and deliver magnesium cations and hydroxyl anions to the causative sites and return the associated pathological cells to a normal morphology.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus are provided for monitoring tire pressure for motor vehicles, or the like, in which coded sound signals emitted from a wheel-mounted sound signal generator are detected and processed. The coded signal from the generator serves to distinguish the sound signal from background noise. The output of the generator is comprised of at least two coherent frequencies that beat acoustically with one another to produce an amplitude modulated sound signal that is then detected by a transducer which converts the sound signals into the electrical signals. The electrical signals are then fed through the processing circuitry including a detector which extracts the modulation envelope and applies it to an audio band-pass filter. The filter accepts the envelope within a predetermined frequency range, eliminating all signals which are not within the designed band pass. A second detector converts the audio signal to a DC level and feeds it to a threshold comparator. The level of the DC signal is directly proportional to the percentage of modulation of the originally received signal. If this level exceeds the threshold value of the comparator, the output actuates a bistable device, which, in turn, actuates a warning indicator. The rate of loss of tire pressure may also be determined by means of a signal generator adapted to emit at least two time-spaced sound signals at different pressures. The two signals are detected and processing circuitry calculates the time and/or pressure remaining before the vehicle becomes immobile. This information is displayed to the operator.
