If the standard data unit is too large to be transmitted within a single sub-channel of an uplink frame, then the standard data unit is divided into sub-data units. The sub-data units are transmitted over multiple uplink frames.

The invention includes an apparatus and method for scheduling wireless transmission of data blocks between at least one antenna of a base transceiver station and multiple subscriber units. The scheduling can be based on the quality of a transmission link between the base station antennas and the subscriber units, the amount of data requested by the subscriber units, and/or the type of data requested by the subscriber units. The scheduling generally includes assigning frequency blocks and time slots to each of the subscriber units for receiving or transmitting data blocks. The invention includes a method for transmitting data streams between a base transceiver station and a plurality of subscribers. The method includes receiving protocol data units from a network, creating sub-protocol data units from the protocol data units, and once per a frame of time, generating a schedule that designates time slots and pre-defined frequency blocks in which each one of the plurality of subscribers is to receive each of the sub-protocol data units from a plurality of base station transceiver antennas. The invention can further include transmitting the schedule to each of the subscribers, and the plurality of base station transceiver antennas transmitting the sub-protocol data units according to the schedule. The invention can further include selecting at least one transmission mode for each subscriber. The transmission mode dictating the type of modulation and/or coding used during transmission of the sub-protocol data units.

A wireless communication device is disclosed that is capable of reduced power consumption. Uplink and downlink sub-frames in a WiMAX, 802.16m or LTE environment often include several vacant symbols during which power-hungry hardware and software components need not operate at full power. By analyzing a physical layer beacon and control information of a received signal, the specific locations of data bursts can be determined, as well as periods of needed operation of a receiver module to effectively decode those data bursts. The receiver module can otherwise be controlled to operate in a LOW power state during remaining periods of vacant time, thereby conserving power consumption and extending battery life.

Systems and methods for regulating transmit power in a mobile station to comply with SAR limits are disclosed. A mobile station may include a processor, transmitter, and proximity sensor. The transmitter is configured to operate at a transmit power controlled by a first transmit power limit. The proximity sensor identifies how close the mobile station is to a human head. A transmit power regulator, implemented on the processor, determines the cumulative energy radiated by the transmitter over a specified number of frames. If the cumulative energy exceeds an energy limit based on a SAR limit, and the proximity sensor indicates that the mobile station is close to a human head, the transmit power regulator may decrease the transmit power limit of the transmitter.

The method further includes generating a second group of slots including resource allocation information for mapping first groups of allocation units to Mobile Stations (MSs) based on MCSs and traffic characteristics associated with first groups of allocation units and the MSs. Thereafter, the method persistently allocates each first group of allocation units to the MSs based on one or more of the resource allocation information and a communication state associated with each MS. Further, the method also identifies if each MS has succeeded in decoding the persistent resource allocation sent in the second group of slots.

A base user queue size estimate is updated at the base transceiver station. The base user queue size estimate corresponds to the one subscriber unit that transmitted the request to send data. The base user queue size estimate is based upon the data transmission queue size value. The base transceiver station generates a schedule that includes time slots and frequency blocks in which the requested data blocks are to be transmitted from the one subscriber unit to the base transceiver station. The subscriber unit transmits the data blocks the subscriber requested to be sent, according to the schedule. Each transmitted data block includes encoded information representing a current data transmission queue size value. The base user queue size estimate is updated based upon the encoded information. The base user queue size estimate influences future schedules generated by the base transceiver station.
