Abstract: One embodiment is directed to a system to provide wireless coverage for a plurality of cells. The system comprises a virtualized headend and a plurality of remote units. The system is configured to operate as a distributed antenna system (DAS) when serving at least one of the cells. The plurality of remote units is configured to communicate with the virtualized headend using a switched Ethernet network. The virtualized headend is configured to communicate downlink user-plane data including frequency-domain IQ data and downlink control-plane data for a first cell served by at least one open radio access network (O-RAN) distributed unit (DU) to at least some of the remote units used to serve the first cell. At least some physical layer baseband processing for a wireless interface used to serve the first cell is performed by the virtualized headend or the remote units used to serve the first cell.

Abstract: One embodiment is directed to an open radio access network to provide wireless coverage for a plurality of cells at a site and that comprises a virtualized headend comprising one or more base-station nodes and a plurality of unified remote units deployed at the site. Each of the unified remote units is able to support multiple functional splits, multiple wireless interface protocols, multiple generations of radio access technology, and multiple frequency bands. The unified remote units and functional split used to serve each cell can be changed (for example, on-the-fly as a part of an automatic or manual adaptation process that is a function of one or more monitored performance attributes of the open radio access network such as network bandwidth, network latency, processing load, or processing performance). The unified remote units can be implemented in a modular manner with a backplane to which different radio modules can be coupled.

Abstract: A service-area repeater for deployment in a service area to provide capacity supplied by a base station located remotely from the service-area repeater includes downlink circuitry to receive, via a donor antenna coupled to the service-area repeater, transformed RF downlink signals transmitted from the base station or a base-station repeater, the base station transforming original RF downlink signals or the base-station repeater transforming original RF downlink signals received from the base station to produce the transformed RF downlink signals. The downlink circuitry includes a signal transformation circuit to de-transform the received transformed RF downlink signals to generate non-transformed downlink signals and a frequency correction circuit to apply a frequency correction to the downlink signals to produce corrected downlink signals. The downlink circuitry wirelessly transmits the corrected downlink signals via a coverage antenna to user equipment in the service area.

Abstract: One embodiment is directed to a repeater system for use with a Fifth Generation (5G) New Radio (NR) base station. The repeater system includes repeater circuitry configured to switch between a downlink mode and an uplink mode. The repeater circuitry is configured to determine basic time-division duplexing (TDD) parameters for a 5G NR cell served by the 5G NR base station. The repeater circuitry is configured to determine timing of 5G NR time-division duplexing of the 5G NR cell based at least in part on correlating a waveform of a downlink signal with one or more of: a 5G NR Primary Synchronization Signal expected to be in the downlink signal as indicated by at least some of the basic TDD parameters and a 5G NR Secondary Synchronization Signal expected to be in the downlink signal as indicated by at least some of the basic TDD parameters.

Abstract: In one example, an integrated relay distributed antenna system includes a relay node communicatively coupled to a base station and a master unit communicatively coupled to the relay node. The relay node is configured to communicate with the base station via a backhaul interface. The master unit is configured to communicate with the relay via an access interface, and the master unit and the relay node are configured to communicate demodulated and decoded data and/or demodulated data with each other. The integrated relay distributed antenna system further includes one or more remote antenna units communicatively coupled to the master unit and located remote from the master unit, wherein the one or more remote antenna units are configured to provide radio frequency signals to a coverage zone via one or more antennas.
