Abstract: A method for forming a bipolar solid-state battery may include preparing a plurality of freestanding gels each comprising a polymer, a solvent, and a lithium salt and, also, positioning a first freestanding gel between a first electrode and a second electrode and a second freestanding gel between the second electrode and a third electrode. Each of the first electrode, the second electrode, and the third electrode may include a plurality of electroactive particles. The method may also include infiltrating at least a portion of the first free-standing gel into a space between particles of the first electrode and the second electrode and at least a portion of the second free-standing gel into a space between the particles of second electrode and the third electrode.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to high capacity (e.g., areal capacity greater than about 4 mAh/cm2 to less than or equal to about 50 mAh/cm2) electrodes for electrochemical cells. An example electrode may include a current collector (e.g., meshed current collector) and one or more electroactive material layers having thicknesses greater than about 150 μm to less than or equal to about 5 mm. The electroactive material layers may each include lithium manganese iron phosphate (LiMnxFe1-xPO4, where 0≤x≤1) (LMFP). The electrode may further include one or more electronically conductive adhesive layers disposed between the current collector and the electroactive material layers. The adhesive layers may include one or more polymer components and one or more conductive fillers. The electroactive material layers may be gradient layers, where sublayers closer to the current collector has a lower porosity than layers further from the current collector.

Abstract: A negative electrode for an electrochemical cell that cycles lithium includes a negative electrode including an electroactive material layer disposed on a current collector that has lithiated silicon oxide (LSO) negative electroactive material at ≥ about 10 weight % to ≤ about 30 weight % of a total weight of the electroactive material layer and a carbonaceous negative electroactive material, such as graphite. An electrochemical cell that incorporates such a negative electrode may also include a second electrode comprising a porous positive active material layer comprising a positive lithium containing, nickel-rich electroactive material, such as a lithium nickel manganese cobalt aluminum oxide, a porous separating layer disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode and an electrolyte disposed in pores of the separating layer.

The polymeric layer has a porosity greater than or equal to about 50 vol. % to less than or equal to about 95 vol. %. A portion of the first adhesive impregnates a first portion of the polymeric layer, and a portion of the second adhesive impregnating a second portion of the polymeric layer. The first and second portions of the polymeric layer may be the same or different.

Abstract: Methods of forming a battery via in situ polymerization are provided. A precursor of a first blocker composition is applied to select edge regions of at least one bipolar electrode and terminal negative and positive electrodes. The components are assembled to form a stack with at least two insulating interlayers disposed between electrodes of opposite polarities. The precursor is reacted to form a first blocker composition sealing three sides of the stack to define a fillable interior region. Next, a polymer electrolyte precursor is injected into the fillable interior region. A precursor of a second blocker composition is applied to a terminal region of the fourth side of the stack. The precursors are concurrently reacted to form a polymer electrolyte and a second blocker composition along the fourth side. The first and second blocker compositions define a sealed pouch including the stack comprising the polymer electrolyte.
