Abstract:
A tagged packet carries a tag which is attached to the main body of the packet by a thread. The thread comprises polypropylene so as to be attachable by heat sealing to the body. The body is made up of layers of sheet material also comprising thermoplastic material to allow the body to be closed by heat seals. The thread is secured to the face of the body at one edge at the same time as that edge is heat sealed and the heating for the thread seal is applied from the opposite face of the body whereas the adjacent regions of edge seal spaced from the thread has the heating applied through the first face. This arrangement gives closer control of the different conditions required for securing the thread and for sealing together only the sheet material of the body.
Abstract:
A system for delivering rows of cigarettes, each for forming one layer of a bundle of cigarettes to be packed in a packing machine, includes a number of fluted planetary wheels (42) carried by an annular carrier (44) along a path on which cigarettes are picked up directly from the lower ends of channels (40) formed between vanes (38) in the hopper of the machine. The wheels (42) transfer the cigarettes in rows to flute sets (48) on a coaxial drum (46) from which the rows are further transferred to a delivery drum (22). Generally the packing machine includes three such systems, one for each layer of the bundle of cigarettes to be packed. In an alternative system cigarettes forming one row are picked up substantially simultaneously by row carriers (220) mounted on planetary wheels (226) so as to follow an hypocycloidal path.
Abstract:
A computer- and software-based apparatus and method is disclosed for managing and presenting information as a domain of data objects which can be grouped according to their category or “object type,” and which can be associated with other data objects, of same or differing object types, according to a myriad of relationship types. The system and method present the network of objects using a computer-generated graphical user interface (GUI) which may comprise a series of tables or trees or other means for representing a set. The invention provides for display of a primary object set comprising a plurality of primary data objects sharing a common object type. On the same or a related GUI display, a plurality of other object sets, known as “secondary object sets,” are displayed in order to present data objects related to the data objects of the primary object set. When a data object in the primary set is selected (by cursor or similar means), each of the secondary object sets will display data object related to the selected data item in the primary set. This “relationship traversal” allows the user to explore the network and ascertain relationships between data objects. The system and method also provide various additional functions to explore and analyze the data, including sorting, attribute filtering, context filtering and view pivoting. Relationship traversal and the additional functions allow the user to view structure and detail at the same time, and to engage in “data mining” to appreciate previously unappreciated relationships between discrete data objects.
Abstract:
A process and apparatus are described for producing drawstring packets. The packets are produced by forming thread loops (L) with tags (T) attached to their ends and placing the packet web material (W) onto the portions of a the loops further from the tags. After securing the loops in their shaped form temporarily to one face of the web, the tags and the remaining portions of thread are placed on the other face of the web to be attached there releasably. In subsequent processing the secured loop portions lie inside the packets and the tags outside. The process allows relatively precise location of the loops so that packets can be produced with the loops in a peripheral channel (P) sealed from the contents of the packets but able to move to contract the package when the ends of the loop are pulled.
Abstract:
This disclosure provides novel ways to modify/functionalize, including crosslink, ligands in the surface coating or molecules in other coatings on a nanoparticle, by using radical addition reactions to add a reactant group onto a ligand/molecule of a nanoparticle. Examples include using a functionalized benzophenone that can be attached or crosslinked to a ligand in the surface coating of a nanocrystal by photochemically-initiated radical addition.
Abstract:
A system is described having a network, a bus and an interface coupling the network to the bus. A host is coupled to the network and executes software to generate packets for communication on the network. A bus device is coupled to the bus. The interface and host coordinate to transport bus device packets between the host and the bus device via tunneling over the network.

Abstract:
The present invention relates to methods for making an alcoholic beverage. In particular, the invention relates to methods for making an alcoholic beverage comprising distilling a first portion of an alcoholic mixture to provide a first distillate; distilling a second portion of the alcoholic mixture under conditions sufficient to provide a second distillate having a composition different from the first distillate; and admixing at least a portion of the first distillate and at least a portion of the second distillate to make a first blend. The first blend may optionally be aged, proof-adjusted, sparged with gas, and/or filtered to provide an alcoholic beverage. In one embodiment, the alcoholic beverage is tequila.
