Abstract: A cannula and instrument guide assembly includes a cannula with a proximal portion and a tube. An instrument guide is removably inserted into the proximal portion of the cannula and extends through the cannula to a distal end of the tube. The proximal portion of the cannula has an insufflation port. The instrument guide provides at least one interior passageway to support a shaft of a surgical instrument that passes through the instrument guide. One or more channels on an outer surface of the instrument guide provide a passage for insufflation gas received from the insufflation port to the distal end of the tube. The one or more channels have a first cross-sectional area at a proximal end and a second, larger cross-sectional area at a distal end. The one or more channels may have the first cross-sectional area along a majority of the length of the channels.

Abstract: A surgical system uses a single entry port in a wide variety of surgeries. To insert multiple surgical instruments into a patient through a single entry port requires that the shaft (262A1) of at least one (260A1) of the surgical instruments be bent between the base of the surgical instrument (260A1) and the point where the shaft contacts a channel in an entry guide (270A). Each surgical instrument (260A1, 260A2) is positioned by an instrument manipulator positioning system (231A) so that when the shaft is inserted in a channel of the entry guide (270A), any bending of the shaft does not damage the surgical instrument and does not inhibit proper operation of the surgical instrument.

The control console includes a first input control operable by an operator and outside of a field of view of the operator, a display within the field of view of the operator, and one or more sensors. The one or more sensors acquire information about the first input control and a physical environment surrounding the first input control. A representation of the first input control and the physical environment is generated from the information. The representation is displayed on the display.
