摘要: A method informs a user of an ink jet printer of the end of life of a consumable. The consumable supplies ink to a printhead having a plurality of ink ejection nozzles and an associated plurality of ink jetting actuators, each of the plurality of ink jetting actuators being addressable. The printhead includes a plurality of address lines for facilitating selection of one or more of the plurality of ink jetting actuators. The method includes the steps of defining a notice threshold that is associated with a corresponding amount of ink remaining in the consumable; providing control logic for selectively controlling the plurality of address lines; determining whether the amount of ink remaining in the consumable has reached the notice threshold; and upon reaching the notice threshold, reducing an image density of images formed by the printhead by selectively disabling at least one of the plurality of address lines.

摘要: A system is described for compensating for misalignments in an ink jet printer having an ink jet print head cartridge that includes a heater chip. The system includes determining alignment adjustment information related to the misalignments in the ink jet printer, loading the alignment adjustment information into a volatile memory device on the heater chip, and accessing the alignment adjustment information from the volatile memory device. The system also includes generating nozzle control signals based at least in part on the alignment adjustment information. The nozzle control signals are selectively provided to resistive heating elements in the heater chip, thereby heating ink in ink chambers adjacent the heating elements and ejecting ink droplets toward a print medium. The timing of the nozzle control signals is adjusted based upon the amount of misalignment in the various components of the printer and print head. The timing adjustments are applied to groups of nozzles so that dots printed by one group are substantially vertically aligned with dots printed by another group, thereby reducing the amount of perceptible skew in the printed output.

摘要: A thermal ink jet printing apparatus maintains stable printing output as certain characteristics of the apparatus change over its operational lifetime. The apparatus includes an ink jet print head with resistive heating elements for receiving electrical energy pulses having a voltage level and for transferring heat energy pulses having a desired energy level into adjacent ink based on the electrical energy pulses. The print head includes nozzles associated with the resistive heating elements through which droplets of the ink are ejected when the heat energy pulses are transferred into the ink. The apparatus further includes a printer controller in electrical communication with the print head. The printer controller determines a pulse count indicative of a number of electrical energy pulses, applies the electrical energy pulses having a first pulse width to the resistive heating elements when the pulse count is less than a threshold value, and applies the electrical energy pulses having an adjusted pulse width to the resistive heating elements when the pulse count exceeds the threshold value. The difference in the first and the adjusted pulse widths compensates for changes in the electrical resistance of the resistive heating elements over time.

摘要: The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for firing the nozzles on an ink jet print head cartridge that requires a reduced number of data lines between the ink jet print head cartridge and the printer electronics. A group data line provides serial group select data that is stored in a set of group select latches on the ink jet print head cartridge and identifies a particular group of nozzles on the ink jet print head. A primitive data line provides primitive select data that is stored in a set of primitive select latches on the ink jet print head cartridge and identifies a particular nozzle in the selected set of nozzles. A first clock line provides a first clock signal that is used to advance the group select data and the primitive select data into the group select latches and primitive select latches respectively. The group select data and the primitive select data is decoded to produce firing data which is advanced to a set of firing latches in accordance with a second clock signal that is provided on a second clock line. The data in the firing latches is logically ANDed or NANDed with a firing pulse provided on a firing line in order to expel a drop of ink from the selected nozzle or nozzles on the ink jet print head cartridge.

摘要: An ink jet print head identification system for providing print head identifying information to the electronics of an ink jet printer includes one or more programmable drain transistors integrated onto a print head chip. Existing address lines that interconnect the printer electronics and print head electronics are used to serially read the digital contents of each programmed transistor. The printer electronics reads each bit by combinationally applying a pull up voltage on two of the address lines while pulling down the voltage on one address line. If the drain of the transistor being read is programmed as an electrically conducting short, then the transistor will turn on and the voltage level on one of the pulled up address lines will not reach a logic high. If the drain is programmed as a non-conducting gap, the transistor will not conduct and the voltage level on both pulled up lines reach a logic high. The printer electronics detects whether the voltage level on both lines is a logic high and accordingly determines the digital contents of the identification circuit. After each bit has been read, the printer electronics determines print head identifying information based on the bit pattern that was retrieved from the identification circuit.

摘要: An inkjet printer includes a printhead for ejecting ink onto a print medium. The printhead includes electrical and mechanical structure for controlling the ejection of the ink. The printhead includes an ink ejector chip having at least one active device, such as a transistor and the like. A guard ring substantially surrounds select active devices included on the chip. The guard ring tends to prevent latch-up when the chip operates to energize the ink. The chip is manufactured using a substrate devoid of an overlying epitaxial layer which tends to reduce the cost of manufacturing the chip.

摘要: An ink jet print head is controllable based at least in part on q number of first control signals and p number of second control signals. The print head includes a print head integrated circuit chip having ink-heating resistors for generating heat when activated. The print head chip also has a switching circuit for receiving the first and second control signals, and for selectively activating the resistors by allowing electrical current to flow through selected resistors based at least in part on the first and second control signals. The switching circuit is operable in either a first operating mode or a second operating mode, where q is equivalent to q1 in the first operating mode, and is equivalent to q2 in the second operating mode, and where q1 is twice q2. In the first operating mode, p is equivalent to p1, and in the second operating mode, p is equivalent to p2, where p2 is twice p1. The product of q1 multiplied by p1 is equivalent to the product of q2 multiplied by p2. The print head also includes an operating mode selection circuit connected to the print head integrated circuit. The configuration of the operating mode selection circuit determines whether the switching circuit operates in the first operating mode or the second operating mode. When in the first operating mode, the print head requires four passes across a print medium to completely print an image, while in the second operating mode, the print head requires only two passes. Thus, a print head implemented according to the second operating mode offers a higher performance design point. However, a print head implemented according to the first operating mode is less expensive to manufacture. Therefore, the invention provides a single print head integrated circuit chip which may be used for two different cost/performance design points, the selection of which depends upon the configuration of the operating mode selection circuit.
