Abstract:
A vehicle restraint system is provided, comprised of an easily installable and transportable base having a deployable vehicle retention means contained therein. In particular, a rigid base over which vehicles may drive is provided, having a deployable vehicle retention means, such as a net or flexible panel, disposed in the base. In addition, lockable rollers, deployable plates and tire puncturing devices are disposed in the base, to prevent or resist movement of the vehicle relative to the base. The base is merely laid upon a surface, and requires no mounting thereto. Upon impact with a vehicle, the vehicle is retained on the base, and the forward motion/inertia of the vehicle is depleted via frictional engagement (sliding) of the base over the mounting surface, wherein the base and vehicle come to a controlled stop within a short distance.
Abstract:
A mascara applicator includes an applicator wand and a container therefor. The wand includes a handle, a stem extending from the handle, and a brush attached to the stem and extending transversely relative to the stem. The container forms an internal chamber which contains mascara and in which the stem and brush can be inserted. The container forms a channel extending perpendicular to an axis of the stem for enabling the brush to be inserted into or removed from the container. The handle includes a sealing lug which seals across the channel when the applicator wand is installed in the container. To remove the wand, the wand is moved in a first direction parallel to the stem axis to bring the brush into alignment with the channel; then the wand is moved in a second direction perpendicular to the stem axis to move the brush through the channel.
Abstract:
Improved tuftable primary backings, carpets made from the backings and methods for making backings are disclosed. The backings employ fabrics made from serrated tape yarns which are coated with a film of a thermoplastic material, and optionally include a tufting lubricant applied to at least a portion of the serrated yarns.
Abstract:
An improved metal oxide hydrogen battery including an outer pressure vessel and a plurality of cell modules are stacked in side-by-side relation in the vessel. Each cell module is generally rectangular in configuration and includes positive and negative terminals which are located centrally of the cell module. Each cell module is sealed within a rigid plastic casing and the casing is provided with a vent which permits the flow of gas but is impermeable to the flow of the liquid electrolyte contained within the cell module. A heat transfer member is disposed between adjacent cell modules and includes an outer cylindrical flange which is disposed in heat transfer relation with the inner wall of the pressure vessel. The peripheral edge of each casing is engaged with the inner surface of the respective flange to position the cell module within the vessel. Electrical conductors extend in sealed relation through the wall of the casing and connect the terminals of the cell modules in an electrical circuit.
Abstract:
A rechargeable metal oxide-hydrogen battery including an outer pressure vessel and a plurality of cell modules are disposed within the vessel. Each module is formed of a pair of back-to-back positive electrodes spaced apart by a separating layer, and a negative electrode having a hydrophilic surface is disposed adjacent each positive electrode and separated therefrom by a separator layer. An electrolyte, such as potassium hydroxide, is impregnated in the separator layers and is in contact with the positive and negative electrodes. Each module is semi-circular in planar configuration and is contained in an open-ended semi-cylindrical container formed of a polymeric material. A plurality of containers are stacked in side-by-side relation. The curved peripheral edges of the stacked containers are disposed adjacent the inner surface of the vessel, while the straight open ends of the containers are sealed and disposed in opposed relation to the sealed open ends of a second stack of module-containing containers. A plurality of metal tabs are connected to the straight edges of the positive and negative electrodes of each module and the tabs are connected by bus bars in a manner to obtain the desired voltage output for the battery. Electrical leads are connected to terminals on the battery and extend in sealed relation through a fitting in a head of the vessel to the exterior.
Abstract:
There is disclosed a shock sub for incorporation in the lower part of a drill string for damping oscillations of the bit and drill string during drilling. The shock sub incorporates a spring assembly including a multiplicity of substantially annular ring springs that exhibit a spring rate of less than about 25,000 pounds per inch of deflection.
Abstract:
A flechette cartridge is provided, containing a plurality of flechettes, capable of firing the flechettes in a concentrated and accurate spread pattern upon firing. In particular, both low and high velocity flechette cartridges are provided, which accurately disperse flechettes in a concentrated spread pattern. The flechette cartridge minimizes the parasitic launch mass to maximize flechette payload, flechette velocity and kinetic energy, and to maximize target effects. The flechette cartridge provides a robust means for reliably stripping the flechette payload cup.
Abstract:
An encapsulated self-balancing remote video camera system is provided, which is capable of righting itself into an upright, balanced position. The encapsulated self-balancing remote video camera system has a video camera, wireless communication means and balancing mass disposed within an internal, self-righting, inner structure. The inner structure is disposed within a transparent outer container, such that the inner structure may rotate within the outer container when resting upon a surface, such that the video camera rotates into an upright position by gravitational forces acting upon the balancing mass disposed with the inner structure. In addition, a remote operation means is provided, which enables a user of the present system to view video images transmitted from the video camera, and to remotely control movement of the lens and/or video camera.
Abstract:
A buttstock for a firearm having a buffer recoil mechanism is collapsible and adjustable. The buttstock includes a lower receiver extension having a bore therein that fits over the buffer recoil mechanism, the lower receiver extension being fixed to the buffer recoil mechanism; a buttstock body having a bore therein for receiving the lower receiver extension; a locking lever disposed along the bottom edge of the buttstock body; a locking pin disposed in the buttstock body and in the locking lever; and a compression spring disposed around the locking pin for biasing the locking pin towards the lower receiver extension.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a composition for preparing optical fiber coatings, the composition including a polymerizable base composition, containing at least one monomer and optionally at least one oligomer, wherein the polymerizable base composition is substantially free of unsaturated epoxidized diene polymers, and a tackifier present in an amount effective to modify a time-sensitive rheological property of a polymerization product of the composition. Another aspect of the present invention relates to a method of modifying a time-sensitive rheological property of an optical fiber coating by introducing into a polymerizable composition a tackifier in an amount effective to modify a time-sensitive rheological property of the polymerization product of the polymerizable composition. Also disclosed are an optical fiber, a fiber optic ribbon, and a fiber bundle that contain coating(s) prepared from a composition of the present invention.
