    摘要: Wavelength interleaving cross-connects pass a first optical signal including a first set of optical frequencies in a first direction and a second optical signal including a second set of optical frequencies in a second direction. In one embodiment, the first optical signal, when input to a first input/output (I/O) port, is routed from the first I/O port to a third I/O port. The first optical signal, when input to a fourth I/O port, is routed from the fourth port to a second I/O port. The second optical signal, when input to the second I/O port, is routed from the second I/O port to the third I/O port. The second optical signal, when input to the fourth I/O port, is routed from the fourth I/O port to the first I/O port. Thus, by coupling an optical device (e.g., amplifier, filter) between the third port and the fourth port, the optical device can be used for bi-directional communications thereby reducing the number of devices required for a bi-directional optical network architecture.

    摘要: An optical circulator with a first, second, third, and fourth port. The second and third port are disposed to receive polarized light entering the circulator as unpolarized light from the first port. The fourth port is disposed to receive unpolarized light entering the circulator as polarized light from the second and third port. The circulator comprises a beam-splitting and -combining element for separating and combining mutually orthogonal polarizations and a non-reciprocal polarization rotator. The circulator can be used to furnish light of a desired predetermined polarization for polarization-dependent devices.

Thus, the bi-directional wavelength interleaving optical isolator can provide bi-directional communications by passing a first set of signals in a first direction and a second set of signals in a second direction.

    摘要: Methods and apparatuses for tuning optical devices are described. Optical devices can be tuned by inserting tuning plates into the optical path(s) of the devices. Tuning plates can be, for example, quartz plates. By selecting the appropriate thickness and optical axis orientation, the tuning plate can be used to tune the optical devices to a precision that is unavailable through manufacturing specifications and tolerances of the components of the optical device alone. Because quartz has a relatively small birefringence, tuning plates made with quartz can be thicker, and therefore manufactured more precisely than the components of the optical devices.

An optical device that can be configured to multiple different optical components. In one embodiment, the optical device can be configured to operate as a single double-pass interlayer/deinterleaver, as two single-pass interleaver/deinterleavers, or as one or more filters. In one embodiment, the optical device has ports on two or more planes and a birefringent element that occupies the two or more planes. Connections between the two or more planes can be made by walk-off crystals internal to the optical device or between ports by connections that are external to the optical device to configure the optical device.

    摘要: A miniature three-port optical circulator that comprises a first input/output (I/O) port, a second I/O port complementary to the first I/O port, and a second walk-off crystal located between the first I/O port and the second I/O port. The first I/O port includes a light coupling assembly, a first walk-off crystal and a split polarization rotator arranged in order along the optical axis. The light coupling assembly comprises a capillary and two optical fibers. The optical fibers are secured side-by-side in the bore of the capillary. The optical fibers each have a diameter of one half of the diameter of the bore. The cores of the optical fibers are separated from one another in a separation direction by a separation distance. The first walk-off crystal is located to receive the light beams and has a first walk-off direction perpendicular to the separation direction. The split polarization rotator is mounted adjacent the first walk-off crystal and has a positive half and a negative half. The split polarization rotator is located so that the polarization components of the light beams that are deviated by the first walk-off crystal pass through one of the positive half and the negative half, and the polarization components that are not deviated by the first walk-off crystal pass through the other of the positive half and the negative half. The second walk-off crystal has a second walk-off direction perpendicular to the first walk-off direction, and has a walk-off distance equal to the separation distance.

    摘要: An isolated polarization beam splitter or combiner, for joining light from different inputs into one common port, and for dividing a beam of light into orthogonal polarizations. In both modes of operation, the splitter/combiner provides isolation preventing transmission of light in a reverse direction. As a splitter, a beam of light is separated through a birefringent material into sub-beams of orthogonal polarization components, and each sub-beam is passed through a non-reciprocal polarization rotator to rotate the polarization so that a reflected beam, or other counter-transmitted light cannot return on the same path through the birefringent material to the source. As a combiner, two separate beams of light are launched with known orthogonal polarizations into a first birefringent material, passed through a non-reciprocal polarization rotator and then combined as orthogonal polarizations into a single output port.
