An air conditioner including a hot gas line for receiving a portion of refrigerant compressed in a compressor, an indoor heat exchanger, an outdoor expansion device for expanding the refrigerant having exchanged heat in the indoor heat exchanger, an outdoor heat exchanger functioning as a condenser in a cooling mode while functioning as an evaporator in a heating mode, and a 4-way valve for receiving a remaining portion of the compressed refrigerant, to guide the refrigerant emerging from the compressor to the outdoor heat exchanger in the cooling mode and to the indoor heat exchanger in the heating mode. The outdoor heat exchanger includes a main heat exchanger section functioning as a condenser in the cooling mode while functioning as an evaporator in the heating mode, and an auxiliary heat exchanger for receiving the refrigerant from the hot gas line in a frosting prevention mode.

An air conditioner is provided that may include at least one compressor that compresses a refrigerant to a high pressure; a plurality of heat exchanger that condenses the refrigerant compressed in the at least one compressor; a plurality of outdoor valves, respectively, provided at an outlet side pipe of the plurality of heat exchangers; a gas liquid separator that separates the refrigerant into gas and liquid refrigerants and supplies the gas refrigerant to the at least one compressor; and one or more bypass devices connected to the outlet side pipe of one or more of the plurality of heat exchangers and an inlet side pipe of the gas liquid separator, the one or more bypass devices controlling a flow of the liquid refrigerant. During a cooling low load operation in which a portion of the plurality of heat exchangers is operating, a liquid refrigerant loaded into a heat exchanger of the plurality of heat exchangers, which is not operated, may flow through the one or more bypass device.

The air conditioner may include at least one indoor unit connected to an outdoor unit, the outdoor unit including a compressor compressing refrigerant and an accumulator transferring gas refrigerant into the compressor. The accumulator may include a housing, an inflow tube guiding refrigerant into the housing through a guide tube, and a discharge tube discharging the refrigerant from the housing. A portion of the guide tube protrudes out of the housing, and a distance between the discharge tube and a bottom of the housing is greater than that between the protruded portion of the guide tube and the bottom of the housing.

The oil separator may include a housing including a suction tube that guides a refrigerant, in which an oil may be mixed, into the housing and a discharge tube that discharges refrigerant separated from the refrigerant, in which the oil may be mixed, to the outside, a first collection tube that communicates with a lower portion of the housing to discharge the oil separated from the oil to a compressor, a second collection tube that communicates with a side surface of the housing to discharge the oil separated from the refrigerant to the compressor, and a control valve provided in communication with the first collection tube or the second collection tube to control a flow of the oil through the first collection tube or the second collection tube.

The air conditioner includes an outside unit, which is provided with a compressor and an evaporator, an outside temperature sensor attached to the outside unit to sense outside temperature, an outside humidity recognition part attached to the outside unit to recognize information about outside humidity, a low pressure sensor that senses an evaporation pressure of the evaporator, and a control part that controls an operation of the compressor, based on both information about dew-point temperature sensed from the outside temperature sensor and the outside humidity recognition part and information about the evaporation pressure sensed from the low pressure sensor. The control part changes an operation frequency of the compressor according to whether the evaporation pressure is not lower than a preset reference low pressure, to prevent frosting of the evaporator.
