摘要: A user interface (210) includes an RC circuit (213). The RC circuit (213) includes a variable capacitance. The variable capacitance is produced by a sensing member (310) in cooperation with a user's finger (311). When a user makes a selection with the user interface (210), the user places a finger (311) in close proximity and in a facing relationship to a section, or discrete surface (320, 322, 324), of the sensing member (310). The discrete surfaces (320, 322, 324) can correspond to keys of a keypad (138) or to directions of a directional button (1030), for example. The time constant of the RC circuit (213) varies according to which discrete surface (320, 322, 324) is determining the capacitance of the RC circuit (213). A controller (118) determines the user's selection based on the time constant of the RC circuit (213).

摘要: Performance of a radio device is optimized by estimating if the device is inside a building. One or more sensors on the radio device are used to measure an environmental quantities relating to the environment of the radio device. The likelihood of the radio device being inside a building is inferred from these measurements. The operation of the radio device then is controlled accordingly. For example, if the radio device is determined to be inside a building, a low operating frequency may be selected for the radio device if a wide area network connection is required, while a high operating frequency may be selected if a local connection is required. An environmental quantity may be, for example, a satellite signal, ambient light, temperature, RF energy, or the response to a test signal emitted by the radio device.

摘要: These various embodiments are suitable for use with a personally portable apparatus (200) that is configured and arranged to render selected content into a perceivable form for an end user of that personally portable apparatus. These teachings generally provide for gathering (101) information regarding this end user (wherein this information does not simply comprise specific instructions to the personally portable apparatus via some corresponding user interface). These teachings then provide for inferring (103) from this information a desired end user rendering modality (that is, as desired by that end user) for the selected content and then automatically selecting (105), as a function (at least in part) of that desired end user rendering modality, a particular rendering method from amongst a plurality of differing candidate rendering methodologies to employ when rendering the selected content perceivable to the end user at the personally portable apparatus.

摘要: Techniques for adjusting the dynamic range of an A/D converter in response to various conditions are disclosed. A value output by the A/D converter is utilized to determine if the A/D converter is operating at or above its current dynamic range capabilities (i.e., the A/D converter is potentially “saturated” at its current dynamic range setting). If potentially saturated, the dynamic range of the A/D converter may be increased. If not, the dynamic range of the A/D converter may be decreased or may be unchanged. Alternately, an upcoming or enacted change in the gain settings of one or more gain stages that condition the analog signal input to an A/D converter may be used as a condition that results in an adjustment to the dynamic range of the A/D converter.

摘要: A diversity antenna structure and a diversity transceiver incorporating the same. Each antenna of the diversity antenna structure is formed of a first portion and a second portion. Second portions of each antenna are coupled to an electrical ground plane and form thereby ground plane portions of the respective antennas. Such second antenna portions are maintained in physical isolation from one another thereby, when receiving high frequency signals, to be maintained in apparent electrical isolation from one another. Because such ground plane portions are maintained in the apparent electrical isolation from one another, antennas of the diversity antenna structure may be positioned in close proximity to one another without causing coupling between the separate antennas of the diversity antenna structure.

摘要: The antenna coupling apparatus of the present invention couples an antenna, located in a hinged element (102) of a wireless communication device, to the receiver (401) of the device. In the preferred embodiment, the communication device is a radiotelephone. The coupling is achieved without contact or flexible cable by parallel plate capacitors (201 and 202) in the hinge of the communication device. The capacitors (201 and 202) additionally act as a matching network for the antenna.

摘要: A method and a wireless device (120, 122) utilize auxiliary information associated with an emergency alert system alert message to direct a user of the wireless device (120, 122) to safety. A wireless communication system (102) wirelessly transmits an emergency alert system (EAS) alert message to a wireless device (120, 122). The wireless communication system (102) also wirelessly transmits an augmented EAS alert message to the wireless device (120, 122). The augmented EAS alert message includes auxiliary information that provides information to the wireless device (120, 122) to direct a user of the wireless device (120, 122) to move at least one of toward a safe zone (150) and away from a danger zone (158). The auxiliary information in the augmented EAS alert message is optionally adjusted based on any combination of: the location of the wireless device, the safe zone, and the danger zone, and the logistics of a vicinity affected by the danger zone.
