Abstract: A switchable polarizer includes a transparent layer and switchable material layer. The switchable material layer includes strips of a switchable material that are arranged to polarize incident light propagating through the transparent layer when the switchable material is heated to a threshold switching temperature. The incident light propagating through the transparent layer is unpolarized by the strips of the switchable material when the switchable material is below the threshold switching temperature.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and storage media for changing user representations in an artificial reality environment are disclosed. Exemplary implementations may: receive an indication of a user representation in a virtual area of the artificial reality environment; receive an indication of a user impairment; determine a characteristic of the user representation that corresponds to the user impairment; determine a plurality of alternative user representations corresponding to the characteristic of the user representation; select an alternative user representation of the plurality of alternative user representations based on determining an impairment level of the user impairment; and output the alternative user representation in the artificial reality environment.

Abstract: A headset for augmented reality applications is provided. The headset includes at least one eyepiece configured to provide a see-through image to a user via a transparent optical component, and to provide an artificial image through a display, and a dimming shutter configured to adjust a transparency level of the transparent optical component. The dimming shutter further includes an active liquid crystal layer configured to adjust a transparency level according to an electrical power provided between two electrodes, and a photoactive layer configured to adjust the transparency level upon absorption of an ultraviolet radiation for a selected period of time. A default orientation of a host material in the active liquid crystal layer may be in a dark state or in a clear state, when no electrical power is provided. A method and a memory storing instructions to execute the method for use of the above device are also provided.

Abstract: A switchable optical retardation device includes a switchable retardation element including liquid crystals and an electrical driver circuit. While in a first state, the switchable retardation element modifies light transmitted through the switchable retardation element by causing a phase shift of a first retardation angle. While in a second state, the switchable retardation element modifies the light transmitted through the switchable retardation element by causing a phase shift of a second retardation angle distinct from the first retardation angle. The electrical driver circuit provides a first voltage for placing the switchable retardation element in the first state and a second voltage for placing the switchable retardation element in the second state. The first voltage is greater than the second voltage, the second voltage is a non-zero voltage, and the electrical driver circuit alternatingly provides the first voltage and the second voltage with a predefined frequency.

Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method for contrast ratio adjustment in a multi-application augmented reality (AR) environment are described herein. In some aspects, methods include receiving first AR content and second AR content to be provided to a user of a head-mounted display. A combined target contrast ratio based at least in part on the first AR content and the second AR content is generated. The combined target contrast ratio is used to adjust a contrast ratio of the head-mounted display by adjusting a display brightness or adjusting a global dimming of a lens of the head-mounted display.
