Systems and methods are disclosed for providing transition between sector configurations of a multi-sectored cell wherein the subscriber units may detect the impending change in sector configuration and react accordingly. Sector transitions accomplished according to the present invention include the use of time dithering old and new sector signals on antenna beams of the transition area, amplitude tapering of old and new sector signals on antenna beams of the transition area, blending of sector signals on antenna beams of the transition area, phase adjustment of antenna beams of the transition area, as well as combinations thereof. Accordingly, subscriber units in the transition area are able to detect the impending sector reconfiguration and react in order to avoid degradation or loss of communication.

Systems and methods for providing mitigation of interference in a CDMA cellular network caused by excessive in band energy are disclosed. In the preferred embodiment, multiple narrow antenna beams are used to isolate the excessive energy from that of signals from mobile units. Control circuitry measures the power level on each of these multiple beams, compares this measurement to an estimated number of mobiles operating in the associated antenna beam, and determines if excessive energy is present in the beam. If excessive energy is determined to exist, the present invention causes the gain of particular antenna beams to be adjusted so as to mitigate the effect of the excessive energy.

Disclosed is a system utilizing a multi-beam antenna and switches the beams to a CDMA demodulation receiver in such a way that the best beams are selected. The transmit path takes the traffic channel outputs from the CDMA modulators and maps each traffic channel to the subset of beams that have the best path to the mobile in the forward link. According, the system operates to reduce interference on both the forward and reverse links, as well as to increase the capacity of both the forward and reverse links. The system also is capable of providing flexible dynamic shaping of the cell and the sectors by mapping the appropriate overhead channels on the forward link and the reverse link in different combinations of beams to sectors in order to shape the cell.

A position system and method utilizes a plurality of range transceivers located at known fixed locations and which are adapted to transmit approximately synchronized digital range signals for receipt by both a primary receiver and a supplemental receiver, the former disposed at a known location and the latter disposed at an unknown location. The range transceivers are adapted to transmit pulse sequences which include an error portion corresponding to the approximate synchronization error of each range signal. This error portion is constantly updated in accordance with the last determined synchronization errors of the corresponding range signals received by a secondary transceiver. In an alternative embodiment employing Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology, the range transceiver time stamp on transmitted range signals may be adjusted to account for the measured timing error for a given range transceiver. The supplemental receiver receives the range signals and uses the same in accordance with known time of arrival or time difference of arrival calculation techniques to determine the position of the supplemental receiver.
