A valve device includes an openable and closable flowpath for selectively permitting and preventing flow between an interior and exterior of the valve device, and a lock assembly which prevents the flowpath from being opened greater than a predetermined number of times. A method of testing at least one annular seal in an annulus formed between a tubular string and a wellbore wall includes the steps of: sealingly engaging the annular seal to thereby prevent flow through the annulus across the annular seal; and applying a pressure differential across the annular seal to thereby test the annular seal, the pressure differential being applied via a valve device interconnected in the tubular string.

    摘要: A downhole tool, comprising one or more separate packers and sliding sleeves in the preferred embodiment, is actuable from a nonelectrical signal transmitted from the surface to the tool. The signal is received at the tool by a control system located within the tool. The control system operates in conjunction with a power supply in the tool to accomplish tool actuation. In the preferred embodiment, the valve member is temporarily retained in a sealing position, isolating pressure in one chamber from a different pressure in an adjacent chamber. The valve member or piston is temporarily retained by a high-strength fiber, such as Kevlar.RTM., in the preferred embodiment. The control system actuates the power source to heat a resistance heating wire, which causes failure in the fiber. Other mechanisms to trigger pressure-equalization can be used. The fiber can be cut by a cutter actuated electrically. The piston can be retained by solder which is melted electrically. The piston can be designed to be substantially in pressure balance so that the fiber can effectively hold the piston in place until it is rendered inoperative by heating up a resistance wire from the power supply as triggered by the control circuit. Once the fiber fails, the piston is released and the pressure is equalized. The pressure-equalization can be used to shift a setting sleeve to set a packer or to open or close a sliding sleeve valve. Different valves can be actuated in series, using different control signals, or in parallel, using one control signal. In the alternative, the same valve can be actuated to open and then to close, depending on the procedures desired. The resistance wire is threaded into the fiber cable to ensure effective transmission of the heat for proper release of the piston when desired.

Both annulus responsive and tubing responsive forms of the coupling apparatus are shown. An upper tubing string and the upper housing section is released from and reconnected with the lower tubing string and lower housing section by hydraulic pressure.

A method of installing a well screen includes the step of accessing a flow restrictor by removing a portion of an inflow control device of the screen.

The upper slip assembly includes a collet expander wedge and a support ring for holding the collet wedge expanded and releasing the collet wedge in running and pulling the packer. The packer is designed for temperatures at least as high as 600.degree. F. and pressures of at least 5000 psi.

    摘要: A needle cover is disclosed which includes an elongate rigid tubular housing having a generally cylindrical central bore. A hollow frusto-conical shaped needle guide, which gradually reduces in diameter toward the distal end of the cover is located within the housing and effectively separates the fore into a proximal chamber and a cylindrical distal chamber. The distal chamber receives and retains a resilient plug which functions as a sealing member to seal the distal lumen opening of a needle cannula. The needle guide includes a distal opening which defines the boundary between the proximal and distal chambers. The guide functions to direct the tip of the needle through the proximal chamber and into the central portion of the resilient plug located in the distal chamber. During manufacture, the resilient plug functions to seal the tip of the needle cannula in a fluid tight seal. The needle cover housing, including the needle guide, is formed as an integral unit. The resilient plug is then inserted into the distal chamber and the end thereof is swagged to permanently secure the plug within the distal chamber in abutting relationship with the distal end surface of the needle guide. The needle guides outer surface, cooperates with a portion of the bore wall and with a portion of the plug insert to form an annular cavity which facilitates manufacture of the cover and decreases the total amount of material required therefor.
