A well system comprises a completion string including a fluid loss control device, a packer and a well screen, the packer being positioned between the fluid loss control device and the screen; and a production string including another packer and engaged with the completion string, the fluid loss control device being positioned longitudinally between the packers, and the fluid loss control device being operable in response to variation of pressure in a fluid passage.

    摘要: A packer or bridge plug is described which may be released by manipulation of the production tubing connected to it. If manipulation of the production tubing is unsuccessful in releasing the packer, the tensile strength of the production tubing need not be exceeded in attempting to remove the packer. Instead, the production tubing is removed along with certain internal components of the packer. Thereafter, heavy-wall tubing, with or without jars, can be lowered into the wellbore with a retrieving tool at the bottom of that string. The retrieving tool latches onto components of the packer to allow an alternative method of release which allows for use of significantly higher tensile loads to liberate the packer from the wellbore.

    摘要: A hydraulically set well packer. The setting sleeve is releasably locked to the packer mandrel to prevent premature setting while the packer is being lowered to its desired downhole location. The setting sleeve is unlocked by increasing fluid pressure within the packer mandrel above a preselected value. The length of the setting sleeve can be easily adjusted to accommodate additional piston units, changes in mandrel length, and various packing elements.

    摘要: A downhole tool, comprising one or more separate packers and sliding sleeves in the preferred embodiment, is actuable from a nonelectrical signal transmitted from the surface to the tool. The signal is received at the tool by a control system located within the tool. The control system operates in conjunction with a power supply in the tool to accomplish tool actuation. In the preferred embodiment, the valve member is temporarily retained in a sealing position, isolating pressure in one chamber from a different pressure in an adjacent chamber. The valve member or piston is temporarily retained by a high-strength fiber, such as Kevlar.RTM., in the preferred embodiment. The control system actuates the power source to heat a resistance heating wire, which causes failure in the fiber. Other mechanisms to trigger pressure-equalization can be used. The fiber can be cut by a cutter actuated electrically. The piston can be retained by solder which is melted electrically. The piston can be designed to be substantially in pressure balance so that the fiber can effectively hold the piston in place until it is rendered inoperative by heating up a resistance wire from the power supply as triggered by the control circuit. Once the fiber fails, the piston is released and the pressure is equalized. The pressure-equalization can be used to shift a setting sleeve to set a packer or to open or close a sliding sleeve valve. Different valves can be actuated in series, using different control signals, or in parallel, using one control signal. In the alternative, the same valve can be actuated to open and then to close, depending on the procedures desired. The resistance wire is threaded into the fiber cable to ensure effective transmission of the heat for proper release of the piston when desired.

    摘要: Well tubing coupling apparatus of the tubing seal divider type adapted for remote hydraulic release control to permit a tubing string including well tools above a packer to be removed for servicing from a lower tubing string extending through a packer while temporarily plugging the lower tubing string, such apparatus including a lower tubular housing section connectible on a lower tubing string and having a hydraulic lock and an upper housing section connectible on an upper tubing string adapted to mate with the lower housing section and having a latch operable with the hydraulic lock to releasably couple the housing sections together. Both annulus responsive and tubing responsive forms of the coupling apparatus are shown. An upper tubing string and the upper housing section is released from and reconnected with the lower tubing string and lower housing section by hydraulic pressure.

A well screen includes a filter portion and at least two flow restrictors configured in series, so that fluid which flows through the filter portion must flow through each of the flow restrictors. At least two tubular flow restrictors may be configured in series, with the flow restrictors being positioned so that fluid which flows through the filter portion must reverse direction twice to flow between the flow restrictors. A method of installing a well screen includes the step of accessing a flow restrictor by removing a portion of an inflow control device of the screen.
