A magnetic recording medium comprising a non-magnetic substrate and a magnetic layer and a protective layer which are formed on the non-magnetic substrate in that order, wherein a substance(s) as a single component or a plurality of components, which constitute a liquid continuously supplied to the surface of said protective layer, are adsorbed on or react with the surface of said protective layer to form a lubricating film having low frictional properties and low wearing-out properties. The present invention can realize negligible friction and wear resistance even in severe sliding at a very slightly kept-off or completely contacted state by continuous supply of a liquid lubricant prepared by adding a fluoro compound and an extreme pressure agent or an oiliness agent to a solvent to the surface of a disc, and can provide a magnetic recording reproducer having excellent sliding-resistant characteristics.

A lubricant which does not splash easily and has an improved property of slidableness, and a magnetic disk using the lubricant are provided. A magnetic disk apparatus featuring a prolonged service life of a stable operation and an excellent record reproduction property is provided by installing the above magnetic disk. The lubricant of the invention contains perfluoropolyether expressed by the following general formula, in which a component of its molecular weights less than 1000 is smaller than 10 wt. %, a component of its molecular weights not less than 7000 is smaller than 15 wt. %, a ratio between a weight average molecular weight and a numeric average molecular weight is 1.5 or less, and a substitution ratio of its terminal functional group is not less than 90%: R1—CF2O—[—(CF2CF2O )—m—(CF2O)—n—]—CF2—R2 (1), where R1 and R2 are univalent organic groups, m and n are positive integers. The present invention is aimed at providing a magnetic disk and a magnetic disk apparatus both of which have a high performance lubricating film which makes continuous sliding endurance and low adhesiveness compatible, and a lubricating film having a self repairing function which makes it possible to recombine scratched off lubricating agent from the magnetic disk surface by sliding with a head onto the magnetic disk surface. The lubricating film comprises at least two kinds of lubricating agents each of which forms an individual layer, the layers being laminated. An adhesion enhancing layer is formed between a magnetic film and a lubricating agent at the surface of the magnetic disk, and the adhesion enhancing layer is fixed onto the magnetic film surface. Then, the adhesion enhancing layer and the lubricating agent are combined. The adhesion enhancing layer and the lubricating agent form a salt or complex body, and the lubricating agent can repeat adsorption and desorption with the adhesion enhancing layer reversely by a thermal reaction.

A recording element or a reproducing element in a head generates heat that decomposes lubricating agent adhered to a slider surface near the recording/reproducing element of the head. This decomposed lubricating agent leads to corrosion of the magnetic layer and the like of the magnetic disk. The lubricating agent undergoes volume expansion due to this corrosion, creating a protrusion on the magnetic disk surface to which the lubricating agent is adhered. The magnetic disk surface to which the lubricating agent is adhered comes into contact with the magnetic head, leading to friction with the protective layer, the magnetic layer, and the like. In the worst case, this can lead to secondary errors where data recorded on the magnetic layer is erased. To prevent such secondary errors, the present invention provides a hard disk drive including: a magnetic disk to which is applied a first lubricating agent formed as (where p=0 or an integer of at least 1, q=0 or an integer of at least 1, and X=1-5); and a mechanism for supplying a second lubricating agent to the magnetic disk having an average molecular weight of no more than 2,400 and no less than 600 and formed as HOCH2CF2(OC2F4)p(OCF2)qOCF2CH2OH (where p=0 or an integer of at least 1 and q=0 or an integer of at least 1).
