A swash plate type compressor is provided with a plurality of cylinders and a front and rear cylinder blocks having a crank case connected to a suction port. The cylinder blocks are connected to a front and rear housing sections in order to cover the cylinders. Each housing section contains a discharge chamber. A drive shaft is rotatable supported by the cylinder blocks. One end of the drive shaft is sealed within the front housing. A swash plate is mounted on the drive shaft and is rotatably disposed within the crank case. A plurality of two-head pistons engage the swash plate via a pair of shoes. The pistons move within their respective cylinders in cooperation with the swash plate. The refrigerant is sucked into each cylinder via a suction passage, and is then compressed therein. The refrigerant is discharged into the external refrigerating circuit through the front and rear discharge chambers, .and the front and rear discharge ports. A discharge passage is provided within the drive shaft, and interconnects the front and rear discharge chambers. A valve is provided at one end of the discharge passage to control the opening of the discharge port in relation to the pressure difference between the front and rear discharge chambers.

A valve assembly in a piston type refrigerant compressor is disclosed. The valve assembly includes a retainer formed integrally with a gasket plate for restricting the opening of a discharge reed valve of the compressor, and having on opposite sides at the distal portion thereof stay portions integral with the gasket plate for rigidly holding the retainer. According to the present invention, provision is made to guide some part of the refrigerant gas compressed in a cylinder bore to be discharged into a discharge chamber in such a way that the influence of the discharge gas pressure on the retainer at its distal end is reduced. In some embodiments of the invention, this is accomplished by guiding and allowing part of the gas to flow toward the proximal portion of the retainer to discharge the gas.

Front and rear housings are attached to the cylinder block to form suction chambers and discharge chambers, respectively. A refrigerating medium is introduced from a suction inlet to the suction chambers via the swash plate chamber and discharged from the discharge chambers. A drive shaft is fixed to the swash plate for reciprocally moving pistons. The drive shaft has a discharge passage in the form of an axial bore formed in the drive shaft for connecting the front discharge chamber to the rear discharge chamber. A multi-piston swash plate type compressor for an air-conditioning system used in a vehicle such as an automobile, including a cylinder block body having a swash plate chamber formed therein for receiving a swash plate and cylinder bores formed therein for receiving pistons which are reciprocated by rotation of the swash plate. The compressor has a suction chamber which is fed with a refrigerant including lubricating oil from an evaporator of the air-conditioning system and a discharge chamber which feeds the compressed refrigerant to a condenser of the air-conditioning system. When the compressed refrigerant is discharged from the cylinder bore into the discharge chamber through a discharge reed valve, all of the discharged refrigerant is impinged on the peripheral and inner wall so as to separate the lubricating oil from the refrigerant, whereby an effective damping and sealing oil layer is formed between the discharge reed valve and the valve seat thereof.

A piston type compressor having a cylinder block in which a plurality of compression chambers permit a plurality of pistons to be reciprocated so as to compress a refrigerant sucked from a suction chamber formed in an end housing into the compression chambers through suction ports of a valve plate openably closed by a plurality of suction reed valves. The compressor also has a valve stop construction for stopping the movement of the suction reed valves when the valves reach the opening position thereof apart from the valve plate. The valve stop construction includes recessed seats formed in an axial end face of the cylinder block so as to permit a portion of the free end of respective suction reed valves to be first seated on the recessed seats, and to permit the remaining portion of the free end of the suction reed valves to be stably seated on the recessed seats. The gradual stoppage of the suction reed valves suppresses vibration of the valves and prevents noise.

A swash plate (3, 18) included in a swash plate type compressor for compressing a refrigerant is made of an aluminum alloy as a base material. Sliding contact surfaces (3a, 18a) of the swash plate (3, 18) in sliding contact with shoes (7, 19) linking the swash plate (3, 18) to pistons (6, 17) are coated with a film of a solid lubricant containing at least one lubricating material selected from molybdenum disulfide, tungsten disulfide and graphite by a transfer method. Therefore, the performance of the film and the productivity thereof are improved.
