摘要: A method and treating material are presented for forming a mixed carbide layer of Va-Group elements on the surface of a carbon-containing ferrous-alloy material. The molten bath is made by introducing one or more oxides of Va-Group elements and one or more metals or alloys of Va-Group elements (other than the elements forming the oxides) into a molten bath composed of boric acid, a borate or a mixture thereof. The mixed carbide layer formed on the surface of the article is very smooth, wear resistant and corrosion resistant.

摘要: A hard and lubricant thin film of amorphous carbon-hydrogen-silicon and a process of producing the same. The thin film comprises carbon and hydrogen as major components, the balance mainly containing a silicon-based material, and it contains diamond-like carbon. The content of hydrogen is from 30 to 50% by atomic and the content of carbon is 70% by atomic or more with respect to the total composition except hydrogen. An iron-based metallic material having the thin film of amorphous carbon-hydrogen-silicon formed thereon and a process for producing the same are also provided. The iron-based matallic material is very hard and has a small coefficient of friction.

摘要: A method and a bath agent for forming a carbide or diffusion layer on the surface of an article to be treated by immersing the article in a molten salt bath. The salt bath comprises borax, at least one oxide of a surface layer forming element (SFE) selected from the group consisting of an oxide of a Va-Group element of the Periodic Table and an oxide of chromium, and aluminum. The amounts of the SFE-oxide and of aluminum to the whole amount of the bath are 9.5 to 21.5 wt% and 4 to 7.5 wt%, respectively. The treating method provides the extended life of the bath, the facilitation of washing off the bath agent adhered to the treated article, etc.

摘要: A method for forming a two-layered carbide surface on a ferrous-alloy article containing at least 0.2 percent by weight of carbon. The formation of such a surface is effected by plating the ferrous alloy article with chromium, to form a chromium layer thereon, and heating the thus-plated article in contact with an element of Group Va and/or chromium (a) to diffuse carbon from the ferrous-alloy article into the chromium layer and convert the chromium layer to an intermediate chromium-carbide layer and (b) thereafter to combine carbon in the intermediate chromium-carbide layer with the element (of Group Va or chromium) and thus form a Group-Va-element-carbide layer and/or another chromium-carbide layer on the intermediate chromium-carbide layer.

摘要: A nitride or carbonitride layer is formed on the surface of a metal material as follows: A treating agent composed of a refractory powder of alumina or the like and a powder of a metal for forming a nitride or a carbide or an alloy thereof is disposed in a fluidized bed furnace; the treating agent is fluidized to form a fluidized bed by introducing an inert gas; the fluidized bed furnace is heated to a temperature of not higher than 700.degree. C.; an activator of a halogenated ammonium salt is intermittently supplied into the fluidized bed at a rate of 0.001 to 5 wt %/hour based on the total amount of the treating agent; and the metal material to be treated is disposed in the fluidized bed during or after any of the above steps. For example, a nitride layer composed of only a metal for forming a nitride which contains almost no Fe--N is formed on the surface of iron steel even at a temperature as low as not higher than 700.degree. C. The layer is very hard and efficient in wear resistance, and the toughness of the base metal is hardly lowered.

摘要: A method of forming a layer of the carbide of titanium, vanadium, etc. on the surface of an article containing carbon by employing a fluidized bed furnace. The formation of the layer is effected by disposing in the furnace a coating agent prepared from a refractory powder, a carbide forming powder composed of at least one carbide forming metal or alloy and a halide powder, and the article, and introducing a fluidizing gas into the furnace under heat to fluidize the agent. This method enables the safe and rapid formation of a carbide layer having a uniform thickness and smooth surface.
