    Abstract: A process for the purification of an oxydiphthalic anhydride includes contacting a mixture of an oxydiphthalic anhydride and at least one of the corresponding oxydiphthalic diacid, a corresponding oxydiphthalic tetraacid, a halophthalic anhydride, and a catalyst with a solvent to provide a slurry. The solvent is capable of solubilizing the corresponding oxydiphthalic diacid, the corresponding oxydiphthalic tetraacid, the halophthalic anhydride, and the catalyst at a temperature of 15 to 50° C., and the oxydiphthalic anhydride is substantially insoluble in the solvent at this temperature. The oxydiphthalic anhydride can be isolated from the slurry. A purified oxydiphthalic anhydride and a polyetherimide prepared therefrom are also disclosed.

    Abstract: A method of manufacture of a polyetherimide composition includes contacting a substituted phthalic anhydride and an organic diamine in the presence of diphenyl sulfone, sulfolane, or a combination comprising at least one of the foregoing solvents at a temperature of greater than 130° C. to provide a bis(phthalimide) composition comprising diphenyl sulfone, sulfolane, or a combination comprising at least one of the foregoing solvents and a bis(phthalimide); and polymerizing the bis(phthalimide) and an alkali metal salt of a dihydroxy aromatic compound in the presence of diphenyl sulfone, sulfolane, or a combination comprising at least one of the foregoing to form a polyetherimide. The method does not require any catalyst either for the imidization or the polymerization.

    Abstract: A method of making a polyetherimide comprises: combining a bisphenol A dianhydride, p-phenylene diamine and a halogenated aromatic solvent to form a reactant solution; heating the reactant solution to a temperature of 205° C. to 330° C. at a pressure sufficient to prevent boiling to afford a reaction solution; removing water from the reaction solution; maintaining the reaction solution at a temperature of 205° C. to 330° C. and a pressure sufficient to prevent boiling for 10 minutes to 5 hours to form a product mixture comprising the polyetherimide and solvent; and isolating the polyetherimide.

    Abstract: A method of preparing polymer particles includes combining a polyetherimide and a solvent at a first temperature to provide a slurry, wherein the polyetherimide is not soluble in the solvent at the first temperature; heating the slurry to a second temperature and at a pressure effective to dissolve the polyetherimide in the solvent to provide a homogenous solution; cooling the homogenous solution to a third temperature to provide a dispersion including a plurality of polymer particles; and isolating the polymer particles. The polymer particles have a Dv90 particle size of less than or equal to 250 micrometers. Polymers powders prepared according to the method are also described herein, wherein the powder includes a plurality of semi-crystalline polymer particles having a Dv90 of less than or equal to 250 micrometers.
