Abstract:
Thin glass elements with improved edge strength are provided—from a sheet glass element that has two opposite parallel faces and an edge connecting the faces. The sheet glass element has a thickness of at most 700 μm. At least a portion of the edge is defined by an edge surface portion that is convexly curved, so that at least one of the faces merges into the edge surface portion, wherein a curved arc of the edge surface portion has a length that is at least 1/30 of the thickness of the sheet glass element. In the region of the convex curvature, the edge surface portion has indentations in the form of furrows.

A method and an apparatus for examining the fracture strength of flat samples made of brittle-fracture material are provided. The margin of the respective sample is subjected to tensile stress by bending the material in a circular arc shape.

A method for dividing a workpiece into elements includes: a pulsed laser beam of an ultrashort pulse laser is directed onto a workpiece composed of brittle-hard material; instances of filamentary damage are introduced next to one another along a path. The distance between the instances of filamentary damage at least in one portion of the path is selected such that one of the following conditions is met: (i) the difference in terms of magnitude between the characteristic fracture strengths of the element upon bending in opposite directions in this portion is at most 10 MPa; (ii) the difference in terms of magnitude between the characteristic fracture strengths of the element upon bending in opposite directions in this portion is at least 30 MPa; and (iii) the difference in terms of magnitude between the fracture strengths upon bending of the element in opposite directions is at least 30 MPa*d[mm]*π/3.
Abstract:
A sheet-like glass element has a thickness less than or equal to 0.5 mm and an edge with an edge face intersecting opposite glass faces along two edge lines. The edge face has strip-like sections with each one adjoining a respective one of the edge lines. The strip-like sections interface along a boundary line that extends between the edge lines. The strip-like sections have a first section with a width ranging from 2 μm to 8 μm and have a first waviness that is lower than a second waviness of a second strip-like section. The second waviness decreases towards the edge line
Abstract:
A glass article is provided that has two plane-parallel main sides, a thickness between the two plane-parallel main sides of less than 3.0 mm, an average near-surface level of damage (ONSL) on each of the two plane-parallel main sides, and an average location-thickness variation (ODS) normalized with respect to the thickness on the specified measuring area. The average near-surface level of damage is less than 2000 damages with an extension of less than 1.0 μm. The specified measuring area is 2×2 mm2. The average location-thickness variation (ODS) normalized is less than 10 nm per Rm thickness of the glass article. The average location-thickness variation (ODS) is a difference between a highest thickness and a lowest thickness within the specified measuring area.
Abstract:
A method includes: providing a plate-like glass element having side faces and an ultrashort pulse laser having a laser beam; directing the laser beam onto one of the side faces; concentrating the laser beam by focusing optics to form an elongated focus in the glass element; producing a filament-shaped flaw in a volume of the glass element by a radiated-in energy of the laser beam, a longitudinal direction of which runs transverse to one of the side faces, and the ultrashort pulse laser radiates in a pulse or a pulse packet having at least two successive laser pulses to produce the filament-shaped flaw; widening the filament-shaped flaw to form a channel by exposing the glass element to an etching including an etching medium which removes glass at a rate of less than 8 μm per hour; and introducing rounded, hemispherical depressions in a wall of the channel by the etching.
Abstract:
A plate-like glass element including a pair of opposite side faces and at least one channel introduced into the glass of the glass element. The at least one channel joins the side faces and opens into the side faces. The at least one channel has a rounded wall and a transverse dimension of less than 100 μm. The at least one channel extends in a longitudinal direction that runs transverse to the side faces. The rounded wall of the at least one channel has a plurality of rounded, substantially hemispherical depressions.
Abstract:
A method is provided for aligning scoring tools and for scoring glass, in particular thin glass, along predetermined scoring lines in preparation for breaking along the score. Glass substrates, in particular thin glass substrates, produced by such method are also provided. The method includes the determination of the actual orientation of the cutting edge of the scoring tool and aligning of the cutting edge to a target orientation of the cutting edge.
Abstract:
A packaging unit for a glass wound on a winding shaft includes a transport unit with a mounting support for the winding core which has a transport unit interior part and a transport unit exterior part. The transport unit interior part includes a floor element and side elements. The transport unit exterior part includes a floor element, side elements and a cover element. The mounting support for the winding core is always connected with or formed by two side elements of the transport unit interior part which are located opposite each other. The transport unit interior part is spaced apart from the transport unit exterior part in a floor region by spring elements, so that the transport unit interior part is arranged vibration-decoupled from the transport unit exterior part. A method of utilizing a transport unit for packaging a glass that is wound on a winding core is also disclosed.
