Abstract:
An absorbent paper sheet is treated with an aqueous wax dispersion such that the sheet includes a fused wax and emulsifier residue in an amount of from about 1 to about 20 weight percent of the sheet based on the combined weight of the fiber, wax residue and an emulsifier residue in the sheet. The fused wax emulsion operates to make at least one surface of the sheet laterally hydrophobic, exhibiting a moisture penetration delay of at least about 2 seconds and less than about 40 seconds as well as a typical contact angle with water at one minute of at least about 50 degrees. There is thus provided absorbent products which exhibit both absorbency and resistance to moisture penetration. The treated sheet further exhibits microbial barrier properties, impeding transfer of bacteria, for example, through the sheet. There are produced tissue products which resist moisture penetration from propelled liquids as well as sequester sorbed liquids in the interior of the tissue.

An aqueous coating composition having a pigment volume concentration (PVC) of from 60 to 95, preferably having a VOC of equal to or less than 0.1 wt %, including at least one pigment and an aqueous emulsion copolymer, the copolymer having an average particle diameter of from 50 to 350 nanometers and a glass transition temperature (Tg) of from −20° C. to 60° C., and the copolymer including as polymerized units at least one ethylenically unsaturated nonionic monomer and from 1 to 5%, by weight based on the dry weight of the copolymer, ethylenically unsaturated phosphate monomer, or salts thereof is provided. All embodiments of the present invention relate to a toothbrush to prevent tooth abrasion and gum damage during use. A first embodiment of the invention includes a handle including an open cavity and a neck interconnected to the handle by a pivot. The neck is movable between an aligned first position and a second angled position relative to the handle. A leaf spring is bonded to the end of the neck at a first end, and the second end of the leaf spring engages the handle to provide biasing resistance. The leaf spring is configured such that if pressure to the neck exceeds a threshold limit, there is movement of the neck portion from the first position to a second position. The threshold limit is the pressure just below the pressure at the brush that may cause damage to the hard and soft tissue of the mouth. A protective sheath envelops the junction between the handle member and the neck member to prevent accumulation of unwanted material within the cavity of the handle. A second embodiment is equivalent in structure and components to the first embodiment except that it also includes a manual adjustment of the biasing force of the leaf spring to provide variable pressure and a motor for providing mechanical movement of the brush head. Third and fourth embodiments are equivalent in structure and components of the first and second embodiments, respectively, except that the leaf spring is bonded to the handle instead of the neck.

A bi-layer, oral adhering tablet (troche) made by pressing powders with a bi-layer tablet press, having greater than 80% acacia gum as an adhesive in an adhering layer. In a preferred embodiment, the tablet has about 99% acacia gum.

A slow-dissolving troche with polyol molecules is disclosed. It may be an adherent troche, preferably adhered to teeth or gums or cheek with acacia gum, or a lollipop or child's pacifier. Consumers are instructed to use the troches at the end of each day and after each meal, at least four times per day to benefit oral health, particularly caries, gingivitis, periodontitis, ear infections, sinus infections, halitosis and risk of Streptococcus mutans infecting their blood from their mouths. The polyol molecules are preferably xylitol. The troches may be made with a bi-layer tablet press rounded on one side and flat on the other, preferably using acacia gum in the flat side layer for adhesion.

The present invention is a method of making a near-premium quality paper product having good strength and absorbency characteristics and a product made by that method. The invention is also a method for retaining a high ash content within a paper web formed by conventional wet pressing. The present invention is also a method for retaining a high percentage of softening agent within a paper web that includes such an agent. Further, the present invention is a soft absorbent paper product having a high void volume. Finally, the invention is also a method for producing a soft, absorbent, and near premium paper product having a high void volume using an undulatory crepe blade having a multiplicity of serrulations in its rake surface which presents differentiated creping angles and/or rake angles as to the paper being creped.

A paper machine for manufacturing a structured soft paper web are described, which machine has a wet section, a press section, a drying section and a web-carrying clothing running around a suction device close to a smooth impermeable belt in the press section for the creation of a transfer point. In accordance with the invention, structuring means for structuring the web are arranged between the press section and the drying section. The structuring means comprise either said clothing in the shape of a permeable wire, the structure of which is made up of depressions and arched surface parts, including knuckles in a quantity of 25-150 knuckles per cm2, and a suction device that, at a vacuum of 40-80 kPa, draws the web to the structured side of the wire so that the web acquires the structure of the wire, wherein the wire operates at a speed less than or equal to the speed of the belt, or a creping doctor that is located in a space between the belt and the clothing and in scraping contact with the belt so as to loose the web during simultaneous crinkling, the suction device having a suction gap for initial suction of the web firmly to the clothing for transfer to a drying cylinder. The web-carrying clothing operates then at a speed that is less than the speed of the belt.
