A method is disclosed for the preparation of active magnesium hydride-magnesium-hydrogen storage systems, which reversibly absorb hydrogen, with addition of a catalyst for the absorption of hydrogen with the formation of hydride. Magnesium hydride particles.ltoreq.400 .mu.m in diameter are added in an amount of at least 1.2% by weight, based on the magnesium to be hydrogenated, as catalyst during the first hydrogenation to the finely divided magnesium to be hydrogenated. The hydrogenation is carried out at a temperature of .gtoreq.250.degree. C. and a pressure of 0.5 to 5 MPa. The method is carried out with intensive stirring of the material that is being reacted.

Silanes of the general formula are prepared, wherein R1, R2 and R3 in the molecule are the same or different and represent aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon groups, R4 is a divalent hydrocarbon group with 4 to 12 carbon atoms and a lateral hydroxyl group, wherein the hydrocarbon group can be interrupted by an ether oxygen, R5 is a hydrophilic, ionic group. A method for synthesizing these compounds is described. The silanes greatly lower the surface tension or aqueous solutions, the surface tension being reduced to values of about 23 mN/m. The silanes are biologically degradable and have pronounced surfactant properties.

A method for the synthesis of silanes or organosilicon hydrides by the reduction of the corresponding silicon halides or organosilicon halides with a magnesium hydride in a liquid reaction medium is carried out by utilizing the following distinguishing features:a) the use of non-pyrophoric, preferably autocatalytically produced, storage magnesium hydride as magnesium hydride,b) the use of conventional ethers as reaction medium, andc) the continuous removal of the magnesium halide formed being deposited on the surface of the magnesium hydride particles during the reaction by the action of mechanical energy or ultrasound so as to form a fresh surface.

C., measured with a Du Nooy tensiometer. The silanes are biologically degradable, resistant to hydrolysis and have pronounced surface active properties.

A method for the preparation of active magnesium hydride-magnesium-hydrogen storage systems, which absorb hydrogen reversibly is disclosed. Finely divided magnesium is doped with nickel for this purpose. A pressure reactor is charged with a mixture of finely divided magnesium and an amount of nickel sufficient for the doping. Tetracarbonyl nickel is produced in the pressure reactor and subsequently decomposed. Carbon monoxide is then withdrawn from the pressure reactor and the doped magnesium obtained is hydrogenated at temperature of .gtoreq.300.degree. C. and elevated pressure.
