Apparatuses and methodologies are described that coordinate multiple wireless communication protocols within a mobile device. A single mobile device can contain multiple communication components (e.g., a Bluetooth component, an IEEE 802.11b/g component). To prevent interference and possible loss of data, one communication component may be prevented from transmitting or receiving data packets while the other communication component is either transmitting or receiving. The components may be coordinated by a central controller located in the mobile device. Alternatively, the communication components may exchange messages to determine transmission or reception priority. In addition, one communication component may monitor the status of the other communication component to determine unused communication slots.

In a frequency domain embodiment, embedded system pilot symbols are augmented with pilot-spaced inferred guard band symbols, multiplied by scaled complex conjugates of computed pilot systems, and inverse Fourier transformed into the channel impulse response. Time and frequency are synchronized in feedback loops from information in the channel impulse response. The channel impulse response is filtered, interpolated, and then Fourier transformed for determining channel estimates for equalization.

According to the present invention, a receiving device within a communications system may receive transmissions from a first transmitting device (202) and a second transmitting device (204), on a single tone (214, 216) within a given time segment (206-212). The first transmitting device transmits a first pilot pattern to the receiving device on the tone. A differentiation scheme (200) is provided and utilized to transform a second pilot pattern from the second transmitting device, and the transformed second pilot pattern is transmitted to the receiving device on the tone.

Techniques for classifying RF channels in a first system (e.g., a Bluetooth system) to mitigate the deleterious effects of interference from a second system (e.g., a WLAN system) are described. One or more metrics (e.g., PER and/or RSSI) are determined for the RF channels. Each RF channel may be classified as good or bad based on the metric(s) for that RF channel. Whether excessive interference is observed on any frequency channel for the second system is determined based on the metric(s) for the RF channels. Excessive interference may be declared if the average PER for RF channels overlapping a frequency channel exceeds a threshold THW or if the number of bad RF channels within the frequency channel exceeds a threshold THC. A set of usable RF channels is formed and includes good RF channels not overlapping any frequency channel with excessive interference.
