According to one embodiment, in a disk drive using a disk medium storing spiral servo information, a CPU generates virtual servo information having assumed virtual track centers corresponding to centers of concentric data tracks. The CPU performs control to position a head to the center of the concentric data track by using the virtual servo information.

According to one embodiment, a servo writing apparatus that writes a multi-spiral servo pattern to a disk medium is disclosed. The apparatus has a servo controller that generates a servo clock determining a head seek start timing, a servo pattern generator that generates a sector index pulse determining the interval at which a multi-spiral servo pattern is written to the disk medium, a clock phase difference measuring unit that measures a phase difference between the servo clock and the sector index pulse, and a controller that adjusts the measured phase difference.

According to one embodiment, a disk drive having a disk medium on which servo data is recorded, and a control unit that controls the positioning of a head, moving the head to a target position on the disk medium in accordance with the servo data. The servo data contains servo-burst patterns written in units of servo-track pitches. A part of each servo-burs pattern is invalidated (trimmed).

The present invention relates to a head positioning control system for controlling to move a head to a target position on a disk as a recording medium on the basis of servo data recorded on the disk in a disk drive. A speed control section calculates a model acceleration for the head on the basis of the distance between the target position and a model position. A model section models movement control for moving the head to the target position, on the basis of the model acceleration. The model position is updated by calculation in the model section. A correcting value for correcting the model acceleration is calculated on the basis of a displacement of the actual position of the head from the calculated model position. An actual machine section performs movement control for moving the head to the target position on the basis of the sum of the model acceleration and the correcting value. The actual position is updated by calculation in the actual machine section.

A head positioning system includes a feedforward operation controller which calculates a basic head position control signal to output to a head displacement providing device based upon the target track the head is to be moved to and the present head position at the time when a head positioning operation begins. Subsequently, a feedback corrected control signal for head positioning is calculated by a feedback operation controller using a detected signal indicating actual head position relative to the record disk. Until the results from the feedback operation controller are available, the basic head position control signal is utilized for the head positioning operation. This basic head position control signal is also used for controlling head positioning whenever an output from the feedback operation controller is not being provided. When outputs from the feedback operation controller are provided, they are added with the basic head position control signal to form a combined position control signal to control head movement.

According to one embodiment, a magnetic recording apparatus includes a magnetic recording medium for perpendicular magnetic recording system, a magnetic head including a read head to read data from the magnetic recording medium, and an actuator to actuate the magnetic head on the magnetic recording medium. The magnetic recording medium includes a first magnetic pattern recorded in a servo area by applying a magnetic field horizontally to a disk surface, and the first magnetic pattern corresponding to positioning data used for positioning the magnetic head. The magnetic recording medium further includes a second magnetic pattern recorded in the servo area by applying a magnetic field perpendicularly to the disk surface, and the second magnetic pattern corresponding to position correction data used for correcting the positioning data. The position correction data is derived from modulated original position correction data. The original position correction data is created for correcting the positioning data.

According to one embodiment, a servo information writing method for use in a disk drive, for recording the servo information, forming a continuous servo track such as a spiral track. In this servo information writing method, the head is stopped when a write error is detected while the servo information is being written, and the head is then moved again at a constant speed and starts writing the servo information again, at the position where the write error has occurred.

According to one embodiment, in a disk drive which performs positioning control of a head on the basis of a servo burst pattern recorded on a disk medium, a servo processor generates a tangent-equivalent value by using a burst value obtained from the servo burst pattern. Furthermore, the servo processor executes an arctangent transform process by an inverse function approximate expression structured on the basis of a relationship between an off-track position and the tangent-equivalent value to detect the off-track position.

According to one embodiment, there is to provide a data write method which is applied to a disk drive, for recording data on a disk medium by a head mounted on a rotary type actuator. The method carries out a track pitch conversion processing so that a track pitch of data track is set larger than a track pitch in an intermediate circumferential area based on an azimuth angle of the head in the case where the position of the data track is included in an inner circumferential area or outer circumferential area on the disk medium.
