A web feed printing press, more especially a rotogravure press, has a longitudinal shaft for driving printing units and a device for driving the web draw rolls. In order to achieve a simpler design without any direct mechanical connected between the draw rolls and the longitudinal while still ensuring accurate drive operation the drive device for the pair of draw rolls comprises a main motor and an auxiliary motor each with an adjustable speed of rotation. A differential drive has two inputs and one output. The speed of rotation of the main motor is varied in a way dependent on the speed of rotation of the longitudinal shaft and the speed of rotation of the auxiliary motor is varied in accordance with the speed of rotation of the longitudinal shaft and of the tension of the web of paper to be printed. The auxiliary motor is coupled with a differential element of the differential drive, which is preferably in the form of a harmonic drive, so that a speed difference in the rotation between, on the one hand, the input of the differential drive connected with the main motor and, on the other hand, the output of the differential drive connected with the pair of draw rolls may be produced.

A drive mechanism especially useful in assemblage with a harmonic drive transmission for providing a desired rotational input to the wave generator of the harmonic drive transmission, and allows for a wide speed range selection while minimizing component wear, instability, and heat generation problems. Such a harmonic drive assembly is particularly useful in powering a controlled infeed or chill stand in a printing press and permits the precise adjustment of the tension of the continuous paper web moving through such a press. The drive mechanism supplies rotational movement from the input shaft of the harmonic drive transmission to the wave generator tuner shaft and includes pulley means operatively coupled to the input shaft, an arm assembly mounted for pivotal movement about the tuner shaft, and a positioning mechanism for precisely pivoting the arm assembly as desired. The arm assembly includes a variable sheave pulley operatively interconnected with the pulley means and tuner shaft, such that pivoting the arm assembly changes the pitch diameter of the variable sheave pulley and effects a corresponding change in the rotational velocity of the wave generator tuner shaft.

A metal coil printing mechanism for providing alignment between two patterns to be printed on a surface of the coil includes a blanket cylinder for applying a pattern to the metal coil and first and second plate cylinders which apply first and second patterns to the blanket cylinder. The first plate cylinder is geared directly to the blanket cylinder for rotation therewith. The second plate cylinder is geared for rotation with the blanket cylinder through a phase shifting device. The phase shifting device can be adjusted such that the circumferential position of the second pattern relative to the first pattern is adjusted such that desired alignment of the two patterns can be obtained. A metal coil press registration system for metal coil press machines having press devices which operate to repetitively punch or shear a metal coil includes an optical scanner for detecting spaced registration marks on the metal coil, at least one sensing device for monitoring the up and down position of the press device, and an encoder for monitoring metal coil infeed. A processing device, such as a computer, makes measurements of coil feed in so that appropriate alignment of the metal coil with the press device centerline can be maintained.
