A system and method for sampling fluid from a production wellsite are provided. The system includes an interface operatively connectable to the port and a separation circuit operatively connectable to the interface for establishing fluid communication therebetween. The separation circuit includes a pumping unit and at least one sample chamber. The pumping unit includes pumping chambers having a cylinder with a piston therein defining a fluid cavity and a buffer cavity. The fluid cavities define a separation chamber for receiving the fluid and allowing separation of the fluid therein into phases. The buffer cavities have a buffer fluid selectively movable therebetween whereby the fluid flows through the separation circuit at a controlled rate. The sample chamber is for collecting at least one sample of the phases of the fluid.

The drilling and evaluation systems and methods for using the systems allow one or more subsurface zones or formations of interest in a well to be drilled, logged and tested without the necessity of removing the drill string from the well.

A casing assembly comprising a plurality of elongate tubular casings (24) separated by measurement port couplers (26) is coaxially alignable in a borehole (20). The measurement port couplers (26) include an inlet measurement port (70b ) for collecting fluid from an underground measurement zone (32) and an outlet measurement port (70a) for releasing fluid into the measurement zone (32). An in situ sample analyzing probe (124) is orientable in the casing assembly. The in situ sample analyzing probe (124) includes inlet and outlet probe ports (148b and 148a) alignable and mateable with the inlet and outlet measurement ports (70b and 70a). The inlet and outlet measurement ports (70b and 70a) typically include valves. When the operation of the in situ sample analyzing probe (124) causes the valves to open, the interior of the in situ sample analyzing probe (124) is then in fluid communication with the exterior of the measurement port coupler (26). A circulating system located in the in situ sample analyzing probe circulates fluid collected through the inlet probe port (148b) of the in situ sample analyzing probe (124) and the inlet measurement port (70b). The collected fluid is analyzed by chemical analyzing apparatus in communication with the circulating system. After in situ analysis, the circulating system releases at least a portion of the fluid through the outlet probe port (148a) and the outlet measurement port (70a) into the measurement zone (32). Alternatively, collected fluid can be stored for transportation to the surface for offsite analysis.

A nipple is provided downhole as part of a tubing (drill string or production) string. The nipple has an interior passage with recesses therein and a seat. A data probe attached to a wireline traverses inside of the tubing from the surface to the nipple. The data probe forms a valve that seats in the nipple so as to shut in the well and allow formation fluid pressure to build. A first latch deploys into a recess in the nipple to retain the probe in place against the formation pressure. A bypass is provided so as to equalize pressure across the data probe, when the probe is to be released. The bypass is kept closed by a second latch that deploys into another nipple recess. When the probe is to be retrieved to the surface, the bypass is opened by unlatching the second latch, thereby allowing pressure to equalize. The probe is unseated by unlatching the first latch. The probe has instrumentation and a sampling chamber which can be brought to the surface during flow periods of a test. In addition, a sampling tool is provided. The sampling tool is dropped on a wireline so as to impact an actuation surface inside of the tubing. Upon impact, a valve is momentarily opened, and fluid enters a sample chamber. After the impact, the valve closes and the sampling tool is retrieved to the surface.
