    摘要: An optical system operable to transmit an energy flux is described. A first substantially spherical lens includes first and second substantially hemispherical portions joined at an interface. The interface includes a partially reflective material on a first substantially planar surface of at least one of the first and second hemispherical portions. A second lens has a convex surface and a second substantially planar surface. A portion of the second substantially planar surface of the second lens is secured to the first lens to form an optical axis. The first and second lenses are operable to transmit a first portion of the energy flux along the optical axis. The partially reflective surface is operable to reflect a second portion of the energy flux at an angle to the optical axis.

    摘要: A method for making an optical connector support member. The method can be broadly summarized by the following steps: One or more features are partially etched in a monocrystalline substrate to form a template. The features are etched in the substrate to a depth necessary to form the functional portions of the features. An inverse replica is created and then separated from the template. Additional material is bonded to the inverse replica in the regions that correspond to the features that were partially etched in the monocrystalline substrate. The inverse replica with the additional material bonded thereto is then used as a pattern for making a support member. A multi-fiber support member made using the inverse replica described in the foregoing will have one or more features formed therein that correspond to the features etched in the monocrystalline substrate, but are deeper because of the additional material that was bonded to the inverse replica.

    摘要: Apparatus (11) is robotically operated to pick up an optical element such as a ball lens (12) or an optical fiber, place it in a groove or depression (13) of a substrate (14), and apply pressure to it so that it is bonded to the substrate. The tool comprises a retracting element holder (17) surrounding a bonding tool (16). A vacuum channel (18) communicates with the element holder so that, by the application of a vacuum, it can pick up an optical element. The tool then moves the element to place it, for example, in a depression (13) of a substrate, whereupon the vacuum is released, thereby to allow the element to nest between opposing sidewalls of the depression. The retracting holder element is simultaneously retracted vertically upwardly so as to expose a bonding surface of the bonding tool. After the element has nested in the groove, the bonding tool contacts the element and forces it against opposite sidewalls to effect a thermo-compression bond of the optical element with the sidewalls.
