摘要: A novel apparatus for and method of estimating the cable length of an active network link. The cable diagnostics mechanism of the invention is particularly suited for use in estimating the length of Ethernet network between two edges when the link is active, i.e. data is being transmitted in both directions simultaneously and the transmission of test pulses is not possible. The cable length estimation mechanism of the present invention is based on a well-known property of the spectrum of the insertion loss of the cable, namely, the linear relationship between the attenuation of the cable at a given frequency in decibels and the cable length. Information characterizing this relationship is extracted and used to determine the length of the cable.

摘要: A method and apparatus for pre-qualifying lines with respect to estimating the insertion loss of the line is presented. End-to-end insertion loss at high frequencies is estimated from measurements made at low frequencies through the voice switch at the central office of a telephone company. An AC voltage waveform is applied to the telephone line being tested. Real and imaginary components of the resultant waveform are measured. These measurements are captured and used to estimate the insertion loss of the telephone line at frequencies in the range of 40 kHz to 300 kHz.

摘要: A data receiving device according to the present invention includes a reference clock signal that is transmitted through a differential conductor pair, an estimation means for estimating attenuation characteristics in the differential conductor pair serving as a transmission path of the reference clock signal, and a compensation means for compensating a transmission path attenuation of an NRZ signal based on the estimated attenuation characteristics. Since the reference clock repeats a transition between 0 and 1 at the same period as NRZ data period without fail, it is possible to estimate high frequency attenuation characteristics of a conductor by observing the amplitude of the reference clock at the receiving end. Based on the estimation, characteristic control of a compensation filter is performed with respect to the NRZ signal. Thus, it is possible to reproduce a proper transmission signal from a signal waveform that has been deteriorated by the attenuation caused in a long-distance transmission of high-speed digital data using the differential cable, and propagation skew due to positive and negative asymmetry of the differential pair.

摘要: This invention relates to the maintenance of a transmission chain which, from a variable input level, delivers a constant output level. To do this, the said transmission chain comprises, in addition to its functional components, an artificial line with adjustable attenuation, which the operator can use when faced with an input level determined by elements situated up-side the said chain, so as to obtain the constant output level necessary for the working of the elements situated down-side the said chain. In accordance with this process the value of the artificial attenuation line varies inversely to the value of the artificial attenuation line integrated in the said transmission chain.

摘要: A method of operating an Ethernet transceiver includes initializing the Ethernet transceiver during a training mode of operation by monitoring background link operating characteristics with on-chip circuitry during a non-data-transfer interval to establish a baseline alien crosstalk value. Training data is then transmitted at a first transmit power level and first data rate to a link partner during a data transfer interval. The link is monitored with the on-chip circuitry during the data transfer interval to detect feedback indicating alien crosstalk effects to neighboring Ethernet links due to the transmitting. The first data rate and/or first transmit power level is then adjusted to an adjusted second data rate and/or second transmit power level based on the feedback. The Ethernet transceiver is then operated in a normal data transfer mode utilizing the adjusted second data rate and/or transmit power level.
