Abstract: The prosthesis disclosed is an unrestrained or hingeless elbow prosthesis including a humeral implant component and an ulnar implant component. The metal humeral component is comprised of an elongated stem with a substantially cylindrical articulating surface on the distal end of said stem wherein said cylindrical articulating surface is convex such that the diameters of the end surfaces of the cylindrical shape are smaller than the diameter about the midportion of the cylindrical shape. The ulnar component is comprised of a metal retainer and a polyethylene bearing. The metal retainer includes an elongated stem attached to a metal base such that the stem depends from the base and anatomically curves slightly outward or laterally from the base.The polyethylene bearing is slidably engaged to the metal retainer and locks into position on the retainer. The polyethylene bearing contains a concave cylindrical cavity for receiving the convex cylinder of the humeral component.The metal humeral component then rotates about the axis of its cylindrical articulating surface within the cavity of the polyethylene ulnar bearing of the ulnar component.

Abstract: A prosthetic cement spacer for controlling the thickness of cement applied between a prosthetic insert and a support member, such as an acetabulum, includes a generally cylindrical standoff body portion fabricated from acrylic bone cement and a pointed wire concentric with said standoff body and outwardly extending from one end a sufficient length to anchor into the acetabulum bone surface. The method of use of these prosthetic cement spacers involves preparation of the acetabulum so that there is sufficient clearance space for the prosthetic cement spacers and then to insert the pointed wires into the acetabulum bone surface in an equilateral triangular arrangement thereby providing three points of contact for the prosthetic insert, such as an acetabular cup. By selecting three prosthetic cement spacers all having substantially the same standoff body height, the clearance region between the acetabulum bone surface and the acetabular cup is controlled and provides a uniform cement thickness throughout thereby providing an improved bonding arrangement.

Abstract: An endoprosthetic knee joint device has femoral and tibial components respectively adapted for connection to the femur and tibia, and respective bearing surfaces for mutual articulatory engagement to simulate natural joint movements. It is now proposed that the femoral component has two transversely spaced sockets as bearing surfaces, and that the tibial component has two upstanding ball parts for respective articulation in the sockets. The ball parts can be separable, by the provision of stems engageable in apertures in the base part. Preferably, the sockets are enlarged relative to the balls to allow mutual rotation about the axis of the leg. Also, the sockets and balls can be of different material from their respective base parts, the latter suitably being of metal.

Abstract: A prosthetic ligament device comprising an elastic element securable to the underlying bone structure by means of a quick release bayonet-type fitting which permits rotational movement during engagement at one end and a length adjusting means at the other end thereof. The elastic element comprises a plurality of parallel, longitudinal, polyester cords which form the warp, interwoven with a plurality of transverse soft silicone or polyurethane tubes which form the weft. Abstract: A prosthesis for a joint of the human body, such as the metacarpophalangeal, knee, or other joint. The prosthesis includes at least a pair of elongated stem members adapted to be inserted into and bonded to two bones which met to form the joint. The adjacent surfaces of the two stem members form an interface with each other to present the prosthetic joint interface. The two members are interconnected by a pivot mechanism comprised of a rotatable element in a slot in a first of the stem members, and a linking pin pivotally coupled to the element and to the second stem member so that the second stem member can pivot relative to the first stem member about three different axes. The mechanism is made so that the pivotal movement of the second stem member relative to the first stem member about any one of the axes can be accomplished without imparting significant torsional or bending loads to the first stem member. This assures that the first and second stem members remain implanted in the respective bones at all times.

Abstract: A prosthesis for the surgical replacement of a dysfunctional knee joint is disclosed. The prosthesis includes a tibial platform, one or two tibial bearing inserts, and a femoral component.In a unicompartmental embodiment of the invention, the tibial platform includes a spike for securing the tibial platform to the tibia. The tibial platform, in the unicompartmental embodiment, includes a track, which may be curved, and which is slidably engaged in dovetail fashion by a tibial bearing insert, typically of high molecular weight polyethylene. The superior surface of the tibial bearing insert is concave spherical, designed to slidably engage the inferior surface of the femoral component. The inferior surface of the femoral component is generally convex spherical, with radius of curvature slightly smaller than the radius of curvature of the tibial bearing insert. In some embodiments the inferior surface of the femoral component may have two or more differing radii of curvature at different points on such surface. Typically the tibial platform and the femoral component are constructed of cobalt-chromium alloy.In a bicompartmental or tricompartmental embodiment of the invention, the tibial platform includes two tracks, each of which may be curved, and each of which slidably engages in dovetail fashion a tibial bearing insert. The two tibial bearing inserts each engage, via their superior concave spherical surfaces, mating inferior convex surfaces of the femoral component. The two curved tracks are in general not concentric; rather, the center of each falls on a line normal to the plane of such curved track and passing through the center of curvature of the concave spherical surface of the tibial bearing insert of the other curved track.
