In one embodiment, spin about one axis is restricted by a spin stop that may be movable to allow for ease of assembly. Alternatively, the boss and channel are configured to function as a spin stop. Assembly of the patellar replacement component in one embodiment is simplified by the provision of a boss assembly region.

A patellar alignment device for determining the position of a patella prosthesis. The device comprises two components—a baseplate and a mobile component which is preferably magnetically attached to the baseplate. During a surgical procedure to replace the knee, the baseplate is temporarily attached to the back of the patella. The baseplate may contain spikes or prongs to secure it to the patella. The baseplate further includes a series of slots for marking the patella. The mobile component resembles a patella and is placed on the baseplate. The patella with the alignment device in place is then placed in position on the knee and trialed. Because the mobile component is free to move on the baseplate, it finds the position that is most amenable to a natural knee movement. The alignment device is then exposed and the patella is marked at the position of the mobile component. Since the baseplate contains a series of slots, the patella can be easily marked at several locations around the mobile component. The entire patella alignment assembly is then removed and the final prosthetic device can be inserted at the marked location.

A patellar prosthesis includes an articulation component having a prosthetic articulation surface and a base component for fixation to resected patellar bone. Each of the articulation and base components include planar bearing surfaces in sliding engagement. The base component includes a fixed pin extending perpendicularly from its respective planar bearing surface. The articulation component includes an elongate groove in its respective planar bearing surface. The pin and groove have complementary wall profiles that provide for an elastic snap-retention of the pin within the groove. The articulation component is free to rotate about the axis of the pin received within the groove, and is free to translate parallel to the planar bearing surfaces, limited by the length of the groove. The articulation component enjoys only one rotational degree of freedom, and only two translational degrees of freedom. For any determined rotational orientation, translation is limited to one degree of freedom, parallel to the length of the groove. The articulation component is free to rotate about the pin at any point along the length of the groove.

A roller bearing knee replacement joint is provided in which a femoral component attached to the surgically prepared distal femur is positioned for articulation on a tibial component, which simulates the articulating surface of the natural tibia. The articulating surface has replaceable roller bearing units which provide the contact with the femoral component. A bearing mounting member has spaced bearing unit receptacles which are adapted to receive the bearing units laterally and permit the lateral removable therefrom. The roller bearing units reduce friction between the components and may be replaced with less extensive surgical procedures than in other replacement procedures. A patella component has a patella button which rides in a central concave groove in the femoral component and is mounted on radial roller bearings to provide rotational movement for the patella button to emulate the motion of a natural patella.

A device and methods for use in determining the trajectory of a patella of a patient during a navigated knee replacement surgical procedure are described. The device includes a first component including a mounting for attachment to a posterior surface of the patient's patella and a second component having an outer surface presenting a formation adapted to engage with a femoral part of the patient's knee. A slider mechanism allows the second component to translate relative to the first component in a substantially medial-lateral direction of the patient when the first component is attached to the patient's patella. The device can be used in a method to help determine the medial-lateral position for a patella implant.

An implantable orthopedic prosthesis includes a first component having a first bearing surface, and a second component having a second bearing surface. The second bearing surface is disposed in opposition to the first bearing surface in a sliding bearing relationship. At lease one of the first and second bearing surfaces includes a plurality of substantially evenly distributed plateaus interspersed with valleys. The plateaus comprise at least about 30% of the gross area of the bearing surface. The plateaus are distributed at a density of about 18 to about 25 plateaus per square inch of gross area of the bearing surface. The first and second bearing surfaces are substantially congruent to each other, and the plateaus have a smooth surface finish of less than about 8 .mu.m root mean square. The valleys have a depth of about 0.0002 inch to about 0.002 inch below the plateaus to facilitate lubrication of the articulating surfaces by natural body fluids.

A prosthetic patello femoral joint assembly comprises a patella mounting component on which is located a movable mobile bearing component. A first side of the bearing component is shaped to engage the patella groove of a natural or an artificial femur. A second side of the mounting component has a substantially spherical convex bearing surface which engages and can articulate against a substantially spherical posterior concave bearing surface on the mounting component. A control means acts between the components to restrict substantially vertical movement of the bearing component about a medio lateral axis of the knee with which it is to be used, but allows substantially horizontal movement and relative rotation between said mounting component and said bearing component.

A prosthesis for the surgical replacement of a dysfunctional knee joint. The prosthesis includes a tibial platform, one or two tibial bearing inserts, and a femoral component.In a unicompartmental embodiment of the invention, the tibial platform includes a spike for securing the tibial platform to the tibia. The tibial platform, in the unicompartmental embodiment, includes a track, which may be curved, and which is slidably engaged in dovetail fashion by a tibial bearing insert. The superior surface of the tibial bearing insert is concave spherical, designed to slidably engage the inferior surface of the femoral component. The inferior surface of the femoral component is generally convex spherical, with radius of curvature slightly smaller than the radius of curvature of the tibial bearing insert.In a bicompartmental or tricompartmental embodiment of the invention, the tibial platform includes two tracks, each of which may be curved, and each of which slidably engages in dovetail fashion a tibial bearing insert. The two tibial bearing inserts each engage, via their superior concave spherical surfaces, mating inferior convex surfaces of the femoral component. The two curved tracks are in general not concentric; rather, the center of each falls on a line normal to the plane of such curved track and passing through the center of curvature of the concave spherical surface of the tibial bearing insert of the other curved track.
