The present invention is a water-responsive blend of a polylactide and a polyvinyl alcohol. The present invention includes films and personal care articles comprising a blend of a polyvinyl alcohol and a polylactide and includes a method of making such films and articles and a method of varying the water responsiveness of such films and articles. In a preferred embodiment, the compositions, films and articles comprise a blend of polyvinyl alcohol and modified polylactide. The compositions and films described herein are useful as a component in flushable and degradable articles.

Disclosed are a novel polylactone having amino groups and to a process for the preparation thereof. The polylactone having amino groups of the present invention is excellent in color hue, and it can be preferably employed in fields such as coatings, inks, ultraviolet ray curable or electronic beam curable resins, etc., in which the color hue becomes a serious problem. Furthermore, disclosed are a novel compound having amino groups and to a process for the preparation thereof. The compound having amino groups of the present invention can be preferably employed as a dispersant for pigments in a coating composition or a printing ink composition.

The invention relates to a method for the removal of lactide from polylactide and recovery of lactide from a lactide-containing gas by cooling the hot lactide-containing gas, wherein a polymer melt traveling through a nozzle forms thin threads the surface area of which is so large that in a normal-pressure or vacuum evaporator the lactide evaporates from the polymer rapidly into a hot carrier-gas flow and the polymer settles under gravity onto a collecting device. A hot lactide-containing gas is cooled rapidly to a temperature below 100° C., whereupon the lactide crystallizes from gas, forming lactide crystals, which are separated from the gas.

By using a slight excess of lactone in the reaction, and a subsequent solid-phase polycondensation reaction, the method generates high-molecular weight block copolymers of low crystallinity. Methods are also provided for generating polyester block copolymers by melt-mixing or kneading polyester block copolymers with epoxides in the solid phase.
