摘要:
A controller for controlling a plurality of parameters to be used by a physical model tone signal synthesizer electronically simulating a tone generating mechanism of a natural musical instrument. In accordance with musical performance signals such as dynamics and tone color entered by a player, musical instrument playing parameters such as breath and embouchure, or bow speed and bow pressure, are generated by using correlation functions.

A method of performing an operational expression representing an operation on first and second operands used for computing various problem data and information relating to musical tones, the method comprising the step of representing problem data, which are to be processed, by using a representation system by which the first and second operands have the same sign, and by which the value of one of the first and second operands represented by bits having orders higher than those of bits used for representing the other of the operands is reduced by effecting a suppressing operation by using a suppressing parameter having a value larger than the value that can be obtained by the one of the first and second operands represented by the higher-order bits and the value of which is to be reduced, the step of computing mantissa part data of the thus represented problem data in accordance with power part data of the thus represented problem data, and the step of performing an carry operation if a carry is generated in the mantissa data.

An electronic musical instrument is of a harmonic synthesis type and is provided with an order number memory device which stores a plurality of order numbers of the harmonic components necessary to form respective tone colors, an amplitude coefficient memory device which stores a plurality of sets of amplitude coefficients for the respective harmonic components corresponding to the respective order of numbers stored in the order number memory device, and a tone color selector which controls the order number memory device and the amplitude coefficient memory device, when a certain tone color is selected, for causing the respective memory devices to produce the order numbers and the amplitude coefficients of a set corresponding to the selected tone color. According to the order numbers, respective harmonic component waves of a certain amplitude are produced and are multiplied with the amplitude coefficients and the multiplication products thus obtained are combined to synthesize musical tones having the selected tone color.By providing only necessary order numbers and coefficients, the memory size becomes small and the synthesizing speed becomes high.

A tone synthesizing system which prevents the dynamic range from becoming unduly wide with an increase in the number of tone tablet switches being selected concurrently in an electronic musical instrument of the type synthesizing a musical sound through the use of a discrete Fourier transfer. In the electronic musical instrument in which, for obtaining a desired musical waveshape, amplitude values at its sample points are computed through the synthesizing system using the discrete Fourier transfer, harmonic coefficients of the tones selected or sine-wave values in accordance with the number of tone tablet switches being simultaneously selected are attenuated at a desired rate to limit a maximum level of an accumulated value of the harmonic coefficients or sine-wave values as predetermined.

A keyboard operated electronic musical instrument is disclosed which has a number of tone generators that are assigned to actuated keyswitches. A tone generation computation means is implemented using a combination of an even symmetric function and an odd symmetric function. One of these functions is scaled in magnitude in response to a modulation control signal. The scaled and unscaled functions are combined to produce a musical waveshape which is frequency modulated by changes in the level of the modulation control signal.

A keyboard operated electronic musical instrument having a number of keyboards in which the loudness balance of the accompaniment keyboards are adaptively maintained at a preselected loudness ratio with respect to the solo keyboard. The loudness balance is automatically maintained as the tone switches are altered and as the number of actuated notes varies on the keyboards. The balance ratio is accomplished by adaptively scaling the harmonic coefficients used in a discrete Fourier transform to generate the tones for the accompaniment keyboards.

A waveform generator for an electronic musical instrument comprises a signal generator (10) developing a binary signal sequentially increasing and decreasing in value at a selected rate and a memory (26) storing a plurality of parameter instructions at respective memory addresses, each memory address corresponding to a continuous group of values of the binary signal. An addressing circuit (24) addresses each memory address in response to the binary signal assuming a value within the group of values corresponding thereto. The binary signal is processed with the addressed parameter instructions in an arithmetic circuit (22,40) for developing a linear piecewise approximation of a desired waveform signal.

Each harmonic of the ten provided is represented by a pair of binary-valued signals; one having the form A .sym. B .sym. C, where A, B and C are octavely related square waves, and the other being a square wave like C. Each pair of signals is coupled to a resistive divider by coupling elements in an additive relation under control of an individual adjustable voltage source. The coupling elements are weighted so as to minimize distortion in the signal resulting from the mixture. The resistive divider preemphasizes the signals representing each harmonic to compensate for a voltage controlled filter in the audio output used to eliminate high order distortion components. In one embodiment a .div.3 counter followed by a binary counter provides the binary-valued signals for harmonics of order 0.5.times.2.sup.n, where n is an integer, and a binary counter driven in parallel with the .div.3 counter provides the binary-valued signals for harmonics of order 1.5.times.2.sup.n. A read only memory provides the binary-valued signals for harmonics whose order is prime. In a second embodiment all of the binary-valued signals are provided by a read-only memory.

In a musical instrument having one or more tone generators in which a plurality of data words corresponding to the amplitudes of a corresponding number of evenly spaced points defining the waveform of one cycle of an audio signal are transferred sequentially from a note register to a digital-to-analog converter in repetitive cycles at a rate proportional to the pitch of the tone being generated, apparatus is provided for varying the spectral content of the tone in response to control signals. A loudness control signal causes loud tones to be produced with a greater number of harmonics than those for a soft tone. A formant control signal also causes the tones to have a time variant spectral quality.
