In a binarized image of a secondary electron image obtained by imaging a surface of the magnetic layer with a scanning electron microscope at an acceleration voltage of 5 kV, the number of bright regions having an equivalent circle diameter of 60 nm or more and less than 120 nm is 8000 or more and 30000 or less. Standard deviation σ of the number of the bright regions in a width direction of the surface of the magnetic layer is 2000 or less.

摘要: A computer implemented method includes obtaining positional information corresponding to end of data (EOD) on a tape and a data extent stored in the tape, wherein the positional information includes longitudinal position (LPOS), latitudinal position (wrap), and number of data blocks, comparing a block number of at least one of a currently read or located data with the positional information of the data extent to identify a current position of a tape head, identifying a positional relationship between a location of data to be read, the positional information of the EOD on the tape, and the current position of the tape head, identifying a directional relationship between a current direction of the tape head locating to data to be read and a pending write direction, and determining an appendable range for data after the EOD on the tape based on the identified positional relationship and the identified directional relationship.

摘要: A magnetic recording information processing device which reads out information from a magnetic recording medium includes a magnetic head which reads the magnetic recording medium and outputs a magnetic reproduction waveform, an AD (analog-digital) conversion part which converts the magnetic reproduction waveform into a digital signal, a memory which accumulates the digital signal sampled at a first sampling period as data, a thinning-out processing part which samples the digital signal at a second sampling period longer than the first sampling period, a demodulation processing part which performs demodulation processing of the information, and a control part which causes the demodulation processing part to execute demodulation processing in real time based on the digital signal sampled by the thinning-out processing part. When the demodulation processing in real time has failed, the control part causes the demodulation processing part to execute demodulation processing based on the data accumulated in the memory.

摘要: Provided are a tape erase element, tape erase device, and method for forming a tape erase element to erase content of a tape medium. The tape erase element comprises a housing forming a gap extending along a length of an outer surface of the housing. The gap extends from the outer surface of the housing to open into an inner space formed within the housing. A magnet is positioned within the inner space of the housing and having a surface extending across the gap. The magnet produces a magnetic flux that extends through a tape contact zone extending across a portion of the outer surface of the housing and the gap to erase content on the tape medium as the tape guide rollers guide the tape medium across the housing through the tape contact zone.

A coercive force in a perpendicular direction is 3000 oersted or less. A ratio of a coercive force in a longitudinal direction to the coercive force in the perpendicular direction is 0.8 or less. A half-value width of an isolated waveform in a reproduced waveform of a data signal is 200 nm or less.

摘要: A magnetic recording tape comprises a tape substrate, a perpendicular magnetic recording layer disposed over the tape substrate, and a soft-magnetic underlayer disposed between the recording layer and the tape substrate. The perpendicular magnetic recording layer comprises magnetic particles suspended in a binder material, and the soft-magnetic underlayer comprises a continuous film of soft-magnetic material. The magnetic particles in the recording layer comprise one of barium ferrite, strontium ferrite, epsilon iron oxide and chromium dioxide. Tape storage apparatus employing such tape is also provided. The apparatus comprises a read/write head having at least one probe write-head for writing data by perpendicular recording on magnetic tape, at least one reel of magnetic tape as defined above, and a tape transport mechanism for transporting the magnetic tape past the read/write head.

摘要: According to an embodiment, on a first track of a magnetic disk, a plurality of first sectors in each of which a data segment is stored, and a second sector in which a parity for first error correction is stored are arranged in this order from a first position. A controller executes a first operation of sequentially reading a first data segment from each of the plurality of first sectors, and storing a group of the read first data segments in a buffer memory. The controller obtains a first parity from the group of the read first data segments. The controller starts a second operation of writing each first data segment in the group of the first data segments stored in the buffer memory, to a first sector that is a read source among the plurality of first sectors, and writing the first parity to the second sector, before the magnetic head reaches the first position.

摘要: A method for characterizing a magnetic recording tape, according to one approach, includes measuring, using a magnetic head having servo readers of known pitch, a servo band difference at various locations along a length of a magnetic recording tape. The servo band difference measurements and/or derivatives thereof are stored in association with the magnetic recording tape. This procedure creates a characterization of the magnetic recording tape that is useful for assessing aging of the magnetic recording tape, as well as improving subsequent reading and/or writing operations.
