摘要: A tool for tape library hierarchical storage management. The tool mounts a tape cartridge to a tape drive to satisfy a recall request. The tool determines there is available tape capacity on the tape cartridge to migrate data from a migration queue during recall operations. The tool sends a locate end of data (EOD) command to the tape drive. The tool receives a longitudinal position (LPOS) range returned from the tape drive. The tool determines the migration queue is within the LPOS range. The tool writes data from the migration queue to the tape cartridge within the LPOS range.

摘要: A backup method is provided for a file system for managing hierarchical storage including one or more storage media on a computer system including one or more computers. Each of the one or more storage media includes a data part which is separated from an index and on which updated information is appended and kept. Each of a plurality of pieces of data within the file system is managed to be migrated to at least any of the one or more storage media. The backup method includes backing up metadata of the plurality of pieces of data migrated within the file system; and backing up the index of each of the one or more storage media to which the plurality of pieces of data have been migrated, substantially at the same time point as the metadata.

摘要: In an approach to automatically reclassifying files in an HSM system, responsive to occurrence of a recall to move a file on a hierarchical storage system from a secondary storage to a primary storage, whether stub metadata exists for the file is determined. Responsive to determining that stub metadata exists for the file, whether reclassification of the file is necessary is determined based on the stub metadata. Responsive to determining that the reclassification of the file is necessary, the file is reclassified, where the reclassification uses a latest classification model, and further where the stub metadata is updated with results of the reclassification. The file is migrated from the primary storage to the secondary storage based on the stub metadata.

摘要: Aspects of the present disclosure relate to a method for reducing repositioning time within tape systems. A request to reposition to a target file within a tape medium can be received. A determination can be made that a previous command issued to the tape system was a write and that an index corresponding to the write has not been written. In response to determining that the previous command was the write and that the index corresponding to the write has not been written, a first file mark, the index after the first file mark, and a second file mark after the index can be written.

摘要: Aspects of the present disclosure relate to a method of writing a dataset to a tape, the dataset comprising a plurality of sub datasets, each sub dataset including a plurality of headers and a plurality of records. The method includes storing, in each header of each sub dataset, at least a portion of a record range indicator indicating a range of records included in the dataset.

摘要: A linear tape file system (LTFS) maintains a series of indexes, and an incremental change dataset, that records incremental changes that have taken place in each new index over the previous one, as each new index of the series is created. Upon receiving a command to roll back the file system from a current generation to a target previous generation, a generation control module applies information in the incremental change dataset to the current index. In this way, the current index is restored, at least functionally, to the state it was in when the target generation was created, thereby effectuating the rollback of the file system to the target generation.

摘要: Described are techniques for a tape unmounting protocol. The techniques include selecting a tape for unmounting from a plurality of tape drives, where the tape for unmounting includes a remaining capacity below a first threshold and a number of migrated files below a second threshold. The techniques further include unmounting the tape for unmounting from a tape drive.

摘要: A plurality of files are stored on magnetic tape having at least one wrap for storing data sets. Each data set includes one or more records. A number of data sets that will remain in a buffer memory after performing a read ahead operation is determined. A number of records that are likely to remain in the buffer memory after performing a read ahead operation is determined. For each record likely to remain in the buffer memory after performing a read ahead operation, positions of the records on the magnetic tape are determined. Each file of the plurality of files are classified into one group of a plurality of groups based on a position of a record corresponding with each respective file and the number of records that are likely to remain in the buffer memory after performing a read ahead operation.

摘要: A read error occurs when performing a read with a first read head. It is determined whether a second read head capable of use in a read-while-write operation runs within or outside of a first track. The second read head width defines a verified area on a track. If the second read head runs entirely within the first track, the first read head is positioned within the verified area. If the second read head runs partly outside of the first track, and a portion of the verified area within the first track is wider than the width of the first read head, the first read head is positioned within the portion of the verified area that is within the first track. If the portion is not wider, the first read head is positioned so that a side of the first read head is at a border the first track.

摘要: A tape drive-implemented method, according to one embodiment, includes: detecting a read error, and sending one or more instructions to perform a first re-read attempt on a portion of a magnetic tape corresponding to the read error. In response to determining that the first re-read attempt was unsuccessful, a range of tension settings is selected. A range of lateral offsets is also selected. Moreover, one or more instructions are sent to apply each unique combination of a tension setting from the range of tension settings and a lateral offset from the range of lateral offsets. For each of the unique combinations applied, one or more instructions are sent to perform a second phase re-read attempt on the portion of the magnetic tape corresponding to the read error. Furthermore, a determination is made as to whether the second phase re-read attempt was performed successfully for any of the unique combinations.
