Acetal copolymers of trioxane and 1,3-dioxep-5-ene having a high degree of crystallinity and specific mole percent incorporations of 1,3-dioxep-5-ene are synthesized.The invention also provides a process for producing highly crystalline acetal copolymers by copolymerizing triozane and 1,3-dioxep-5-ene and precipitating the copolymer product from solution.The copolymers show much improved stability against halogen degradation.

A trioxane polymer is continuously produced with a continuous stirring-mixing apparatus. The apparatus includes two mutually parallel rotational shafts, a large number of paddles mounted on each rotational shaft and a barrel having an inside wall surface along the circular surface traced by the respective paddles, as they rotate. Thus, the barrel has a cross-section in the shape of two circles concentric with the two rotational shafts, which overlap each other. The apparatus is also provided with a temperature controlling jacket. In the operation of the apparatus, a material mixture of trioxane, catalyzer, other copolymerizable comonomers, as the case may be, and additives, is continuously fed in through a material supply port located at one end thereof, then, the material mixture is subjected to polymerization or copolymerization reaction, while being stirred by turning the aforementioned rotational shafts in an opposite direction to each other and, thereafter, the polymers or copolymers of trioxane are taken out as fine granules through a discharge port located at the other end thereof. The method is characterized in that at least one set of paddles of a sectional shape which meets a requirement that when a pair of paddles facing each other are turned in different directions around their rotational axes, the clearance between them shall be kept always as narrow as less than 3/100 of the barrel ID, are mounted on each shaft, adjoining each other, and the different direction turning is made in a state such that the clearance between the farthest part from the rotational axis of said paddle and the inside wall of the barrel are always maintained as narrow as less than 3/100 of the barrel ID.

A solid polymerization product is continuously produced from a liquid stock by employing a continuous agitator-mixer type reactor including two parallel shafts rotatable in same direction or in opposite directions, a multiplicity of paddles mounted on each of the shafts, and a barrel with its inner periphery proximate to the outer peripheries of the paddles, said paddles being arranged so that the major axis end of each paddle on one of the shafts is allowed to periodically come close to the minor axis ends of a corresponding paddle on the other shaft, said reactor being such that feed stock is charged from an inlet port provided at one end of the longitudinal of the reactor and polymerization product is discharged from an outlet port provided at the other end, said method of continuous polymerization being characterized in that the rear-side portion of the reactor including the outlet port is raised so that the major axis of the reactor has a slope angle of 1.degree.-10.degree. relative to the horizontal, whereby reaction is allowed to take place in the reactor as installed in such inclined state.

Suitable initiators are salt-like compounds, especially onium salts of Lewis acids. The initiator is used in the form of a solution in a cyclic carbonic acid ester present in a liquid phase. The oxymethylene polymers are thermoplastic and may be used as engineering materials.

Copolymers of trioxane with cyclic acetals may be prepared by copolymerization of the monomers in solid phase. For this purpose the monomers are first mixed homogeneously in a liquid phase with a catalyst, the mixture is then solidified by cooling and finally polymerized by heating, while maintaining it in a solid phase. The liquid phase mixture is cooled to solidify it immediately after mixing and prior to development of turbidity in the liquid mixture. Cooling can be effected, for example, on a chilled rotating roll. The moulding composition, obtained after having worked up the copolymer as usual, is a suitable material for the preparation of molded semi-finished products and finished articles.

The polyoxymethylene so made has superior thermal stability and excellent strength and is obtained at a high yield in one step.
